2020 Kuwaiti General Election
General elections were held in Kuwait on 5 December 2020. Two-thirds of the incumbents lost their seats, including the 2016 parliament's sole woman MP Safa Al Hashem. Background Registration of candidates contesting for the 50 seats of the National Assembly took place between 26 October and 4 November 2020. 102 schools were used for the 2020 National Assembly elections on December 5. Each school had a clinic set up to check on the health condition of all those entering. Electoral system The 50 elected members of the National Assembly are elected from five 10-seat constituencies by single non-transferable vote. Political parties are not officially licensed, therefore candidates run as individuals, although many political groups operate freely as de facto political parties. Jaber Al-Mubarak Al-Hamad Al-Sabah
Sheikh Jaber Al-Mubarak Al-Hamad Al-Sabah (, 5 January 1942 – 14 September 2024) was a Kuwaiti royal and politician who served as the prime minister of Kuwait from 2011 to 2019. He previously served as minister of defense as well as deputy prime minister. In April 2021 a Kuwaiti court ordered his detention on corruption charges. Jaber was first appointed prime minister on 4 December 2011. A year later, on 5 December 2012, he was reappointed prime minister following the parliamentary election held on 1 December 2012. He was re-appointed in the same position on 1 November 2017. Career Jaber began his career an advisor at the administrative affairs department in the Amiri Diwan in 1968 and served there until 1971. Khaled Al Jarrah Al Sabah
Khaled Al Jarrah Al Sabah (, born 1953) is a former Kuwaiti politician and retired lieutenant general. As a member of the ruling House of Sabah, Al Sabah family, he does not belong to the Mubarak Al-Sabah, Mubarak branch eligible for the emirate. He served as deputy prime minister and minister of defense from August 4, 2013, to December 11, 2017. Subsequently, he held the positions of deputy prime minister and minister of interior from December 11, 2017, to November 18, 2019. His career has been marred by legal troubles; in March 2021, the Kuwaiti ministerial court ordered his arrest on charges of embezzling public funds. 2015 Kuwait Mosque Bombing
A suicide bombing took place on 26 June 2015 at a Shia mosque in Kuwait. The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant claimed responsibility for the attack.
