Niger, officially the Republic of the Niger, is a landlocked country in West Africa. 2021 Nigerien Coup D'état Attempt
The 2021 Nigerien coup d'etat attempt occurred on 31 March at around 3 am WAT (2 am UTC) after gunfire erupted in the streets of Niamey, the capital of Niger, two days before the inauguration of president-elect Mohamed Bazoum. The coup attempt was staged by elements within the military, and was attributed to an Air Force unit based in the area of the Niamey Airport. The alleged leader of the plot was Captain Sani Saley Gourouza, who was in charge of security at the unit's base. After the coup attempt was foiled, the perpetrators were arrested. Context The coup attempt took place while Niger was mired in the War in the Sahel, with marked terrorism and inter-ethnic violence. G5 Sahel
G5 Sahel or G5S () is an institutional framework for coordination of regional cooperation in development policies and security matters in west Africa. It was created on 16 February 2014 in Nouakchott, Mauritania, at a summit of five Sahel countries: Burkina Faso, Chad, Mali, Mauritania, and Niger. It adopted a convention of establishment on 19 December 2014, and is permanently seated in Mauritania. The coordination is organised on different levels. The military aspect is coordinated by the respective countries' Chiefs of Staff. The purpose of G5 Sahel was to strengthen the bond between economic development and security, and together battle the threat of jihadist organizations operating in the region ( AQIM, MOJWA, Al-Mourabitoun, and Boko Haram). The Community of Sahel–Saharan States (CEN-SAD; ; ; ) aims to create a free trade area within a region of Africa. There are questions with regard to whether its level of economic integration qualifies it under the enabling clause of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT). The annual ordinary session of the Conference of Heads of State and Government convenes in different Member State capitals on a rotational basis. Maradi School Fire
On 8 November 2021, a classroom in a primary school caught fire in the city of Maradi in southern Niger. As a result, 26 children were killed and more than fourteen were injured. Background Niger is one of the poorest countries in the world, school buildings are usually made of weeds and straw. Straw huts are frequently used as "temporary overflow structures" since Niger's school system is overwhelmed by the amount of children needing education. Niger Gold Mine Collapse
The Niger gold mine collapse occurred on 7 November 2021 when a manually dug well collapsed at the Garin-Liman mining area of Maradi region, Niger. The day of the mine disaster left 18 people dead on the spot, 7 injured and hospitalised, and dozens of miners buried underground waiting to be rescued. However, equipment limitations have slowed the rescue process. On 9 November 2021, two days after the mine disaster, rescuers found more bodies in the collapsed mine. Eventually, the number of people killed in the accident rose to 32. Since the incident took place on the border between Niger and Nigeria, a large number of Nigerians work in the area. According to reports, among the victims, 13 were Nigerians. However, due to the lack of relevant reports, the fatality rate of the accident and the cure rate of the injured who were sent to the hospital have not been presented.
