Surfside Condominium Collapse
On June 24, 2021, at approximately 1:22 a.m. EDT, Champlain Towers South, a 12-story beachfront condominium in the Miami suburb of Surfside, Florida, United States, partially collapsed, causing the deaths of 98 people. Four people were rescued from the rubble, but one of them died of injuries shortly after arriving at the hospital. Eleven others were injured. Approximately 35 were rescued the same day from the un-collapsed portion of the building, which was demolished ten days later. A contributing factor under investigation is long-term degradation of reinforced concrete structural support in the basement-level parking garage under the pool deck, due to water penetration and corrosion of the reinforcing steel. Murder Of Tristyn Bailey
The murder of Tristyn Tyne Bailey took place on May 9, 2021, on Mother's Day, in St. Johns County, Florida, United States. Bailey, a 13-year-old middle schooler and cheerleader, was murdered by Aiden Fucci (born November 6, 2006), a 14-year-old schoolmate. Bailey was reported missing by her family that morning, her body was found later that day by a resident in a wooded area near St. Johns. Her body had 114 stab wounds. A residential surveillance camera recorded Bailey walking around at 1:45 am with Fucci. A later recording showed Fucci running alone in the opposite direction with his shoes in hand. On the evening of May 9, investigators searched Fucci's house, where bloody clothes were found in his room and in the bathroom sink. 1986 FBI Miami Shootout
On April 11, 1986, a shootout occurred between field agents for the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and two armed men in what is now Pinecrest, Miami-Dade County, Florida. The two men, former U.S. Army servicemen Michael Lee Platt and William Russell Matix, were suspected of committing a series of violent crimes, mostly bank robberies, in and around the Miami metropolitan area. Although they had partially surrounded the suspects after maneuvering them off a local road, the agents involved quickly found their firepower was outmatched by the weapons which Platt and Matix had in their vehicle. During the shootout which ensued, Platt in particular was able to repeatedly return fire despite sustaining multiple hits. Two Special Agents—Benjamin Grogan and Jerry Dove—were shot and killed, while five other agents were injured by gunfire. 2021 Sunrise, Florida Shootout
On February 2, 2021, a shootout occurred between David Lee Huber and several agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) at an apartment complex in Sunrise, Florida, United States. At the time, the agents were serving a warrant on Huber related to a child pornography case. Two FBI agents were fatally shot and three others were injured. Huber was later found dead after barricading himself inside the apartment. The incident was one of the deadliest in the FBI's history.
