2021 Algerian Parliamentary Election
Snap parliamentary elections were held in Algeria on 12 June 2021 to elect all 407 members of the People's National Assembly. Initially expected to be held 2022, the elections were brought forward following a constitutional amendment approved in a referendum in November 2020. Background 2017 legislative election The 2017 parliamentary elections were characterized by a low turnout of 35%, lower than the 43% turnout in the 2012 parliamentary elections. The ruling coalition, an alliance between the National Liberation Front (FLN) and the National Rally for Democracy (RND), retained the absolute majority of seats in the National People's Assembly, despite a sharp decline in seats won by FLN. Society in Algeria has been tense for several years due to the fall in oil prices, as income from hydrocarbons represented 60% of the state budget. Algeria, as of 2024, is divided into 58 wilaya, wilayas (province, provinces). Prior to December 18, 2019, there were 48 provinces. 2021 Algeria Wildfires
The 2021 Algeria wildfires were multiple wildfires that happened in the Kabylia region of Algeria since 9 August 2021, which have killed 90 people, including 57 civilians and 33 soldiers. The soldiers died after being trapped in the blaze during rescue operations. On 9 August, many fires started up in the Kabylia region and elsewhere, and Algerian authorities sent soldiers to help citizens with the blazes and evacuations. On 10 August, multiple fires burned Mediterranean trees, destroying olive trees and killing cattle and chickens. Many distant villages have very limited water. Some villagers fled, while others tried to hold back the flames themselves, using buckets, branches and rudimentary tools, due to the unavailability of firefighting aircraft. 2019–2021 Algerian Protests
The 2019–2021 Algerian protests, also called Revolution of Smiles or Hirak (), began on 16 February 2019, six days after Abdelaziz Bouteflika announced his candidacy for a fifth presidential term in a signed statement. These protests, without precedent since the Algerian Civil War, were peaceful and led the military to insist on Bouteflika's immediate resignation, which took place on 2 April 2019.
