In 2020, the foremost competitions in the sport of athletics were the 2020 Summer Olympics held in Tokyo, the 2020 World Athletics Indoor Championships held in Nanjing, China and the 2020 IAAF World Half Marathon Championships held in Gdynia, Poland. All three were rescheduled due to the COVID-19 pandemicm with the 2020 IAAF World Half Marathon Championships being the only event still held in 2020. Athletics At The 2020 Summer Olympics
Athletics at the 2020 Summer Olympics were held during the last ten days of the Games. They were due to be held from 31 July – 9 August 2020, at the Olympic Stadium in Tokyo, Japan. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the games were postponed to 2021, with the track and field events set for 30 July – 8 August. The sport of athletics at these Games was split into three distinct sets of events: track and field events, remaining in Tokyo, and road running events and racewalking events, moved to Sapporo. A total of 48 events were held, one more than in 2016, with the addition of a mixed relay event. Olympic stadium and venues The National Stadium, which was known as the Olympic Stadium during the games, completely rebuilt and inaugurated on 21 December 2019, was the venue of all the track and field events, while road events (marathons and racewalks) took place at Odori Park in Sapporo. Florentina Costina Iusco, born Marincu (born 8 April 1996 in Deva) is a Romanian track and field athlete who competes in the long jump. Iusco grew up in Deva, Romania, a city famous for gymnastics. She was interested in sports and as her physique was not suited to gymnastics she focused on athletics instead. Her international debut came at the senior level when she was aged sixteen. At the 2013 European Athletics Indoor Championships she came 17th, failing to go beyond six metres. She came to prominence internationally with a gold medal double in the long jump and triple jump at the 2013 World Youth Championships in Athletics – becoming only the second athlete to achieve that feat, after her compatriot Cristine Spataru. Luiza Gega (born 5 November 1988) is an Albanian middle- and long-distance runner who specialises in the 3000 metres steeplechase. She is the 2023 European Games and 2022 European Championships champion in 3000 metres steeplechase. She is the national record holder in 3000 metres steeplechase, 800 metres, 1500 metres, 3000 metres, 5000 metres, 10,000 metres, and marathon. Career Gega began athletics when she was 14 years old.
