President Of Burundi
The president of Burundi, officially the President of the Republic (French: ''Président de la République''), is the head of state and head of government of the Republic of Burundi. The president is also commander-in-chief of the National Defence Force. The office of the presidency was established when Michel Micombero declared Burundi a republic on 28 November 1966. The first constitution to specify the powers and duties of the president was the constitution of 1974 adopted in 1976. The constitution, written by Micombero, affirmed Micombero's position as the first president of Burundi. The powers of the president currently derive from the 2005 constitution implemented as a result of the 2000 Arusha Accords after the Burundian Civil War. The current president since 18 June 2020 is Évariste Ndayishimiye. Pierre Nkurunziza
Pierre Nkurunziza (18 December 19648 June 2020) was a Burundian politician who served as the ninth president of Burundi for almost 15 years from August 2005 until his death in June 2020. A member of the Hutu ethnic group, Nkurunziza taught physical education before becoming involved in politics during the Burundian Civil War as part of the rebel National Council for the Defense of Democracy – Forces for the Defense of Democracy (''Conseil National Pour la Défense de la Démocratie – Forces pour la Défense de la Démocratie'', CNDD–FDD) of which he became leader in 2000. The CNDD–FDD became a political party at the end of the Civil War and Nkurunziza was elected president. He held the post controversially for three terms, facing bloody opposition, sparking significant public unrest in 2015. Burundi At The 2019 African Games
Burundi competed at the 2019 African Games held from 19 to 31 August 2019 in Rabat, Morocco. Athletics Onesphore Nzikwinkunda finished in 6th place in the men's 10,000 metres event. Rodrigue Kwizera competed in the men's 5000 metres and he finished in 16th place. Cavaline Nahimana competed in the women's 5000 metres event and she finished in 8th place. Patrick Nibafasha competed in the men's 1500 metres but did not qualify to compete in the final. Violette Ndayikengurukiye competed in the women's 800 metres event and also did not qualify to compete in the final. Two athletes represented Burundi in the men's 800 metres: Eric Nzikwinkunda and Prosper Niyonkuru. Niyonkuru did not advance to the semifinals and Nzikwinkunda finished in 11th place in the semifinals. Cycling Leonidas Ahishakiye, Mussa Amissi and Amadi Uwimana competed in road cycling. 2019 Burundi Landslides
The 2019 Burundi landslides were a series of rapidly occurring natural disasters in 2019. On December 4, 2019, less than two months after the October celebration of the International Day for Disaster Reduction (IDDR), heavy rains precipitated the deadly series of landslides that followed later that night into the next day, affecting a total of 9,935 people in Nyempundu, Gikomero and Rukombe of the northwestern provinces of Cibitoke, bordering Rwanda, and Bubanza as well as the northeastern province of Cankuzo. At least 27 people died and 10 remained missing as of the December 11 human toll. 7 injured persons were admitted into Cibitoke referral hospital, 6 of whom were discharged, and the seventh was transferred to the Kigobe hospital, managed by Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders-Burundi (MSF-B). Faty Papy
Faty Papy (18 September 1990 – 25 April 2019) was a Burundian professional association football player who last played for Malanti Chiefs in the Premier League of Eswatini. He also played with the Burundi national football team. Career Papy signed on 25 December 2008 for Trabzonspor, coming from AS Inter Star a football club based in Bujumbura. Sports magazine Goal.com suggested Papy as one of the 10 African Players to Watch in 2009. On 24 June 2009 Papy was loaned out to MVV. On 5 January 2011, Trabzonspor released the Burundian midfielder by mutual consent making him a free agent. In 2016, Papy left South African club Bidvest Wits after four years, due to heart problems.
