2018 World Weightlifting Championships
The 2018 World Weightlifting Championships were held in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan from 1 to 10 November 2018. This was the first World Championship after the International Weightlifting Federation, IWF changed their weight classes and nullified all world records. As a result, this World Championship saw a total of 31 senior World record progression men's weightlifting, men's world records and 41 senior World record progression women's weightlifting, women's world records set. To celebrate the event, then-President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow lifted a golden weight bar, albeit without any actual weights, during a cabinet meeting while his subordinates applauded him. The bizarre scene, broadcast on state media, was met with ridicule by worldwide press. Ashgabat
Ashgabat (Turkmen language, Turkmen: ''AÅŸgabat'') is the capital city, capital and largest city of Turkmenistan. It lies between the Karakum Desert and the Kopet Dag, Kopetdag mountain range in Central Asia, approximately 50 km (30 mi) away from the Iran-Turkmenistan border. Lü Xiaojun (; pinyin: lÇšxiÇŽojÅ«n, born 27 July 1984) is a Chinese weightlifter. He is a three-time Olympic champion and five-time world champion competing in the 77 kg category until 2018 and 81 kg starting in 2018 after the International Weightlifting Federation reorganized the categories. Mohamed Ehab Youssef Ahmed Mahmoud (; born 21 November 1989), known as Mohamed Mahmoud or Mohamed Ehab, is an Egyptian weightlifter, and World Champion competing in the 77 kg category until 2018 and 81 kg starting in 2018 after the International Weightlifting Federation reorganized the categories. Early life Ehab was born in Faiyum, Egypt a city located 100 kilometers southwest from Cairo. He was introduced to weightlifting by his father. Ehab started training with a coach at the age of 8 after his brother took him to a weightlifting gym. He went on to join the Egyptian national team at the age of 15 at a body weight of 56 kg. Shi Zhiyong (; born 10 October 1993) is a Chinese weightlifter, two time Olympic Champion, three time World Champion and four time Asian Champion competing in the 69 kg category until 2018 and 73 kg starting in 2018 after the International Weightlifting Federation reorganized the categories. Shi was born Shi Lei (Chinese: 石磊), but his coach Zhan Xugang gave him the new name after former Olympic Champion Shi Zhiyong. Óscar Figueroa (weightlifter)
Oscar Albeiro Figueroa Mosquera (born 27 April 1983) is a retired Colombian weightlifter, and a gold medallist competing in the 62 kg category until 2018 and 67 kg starting in 2018 after the International Weightlifting Federation reorganized the categories. He was born in the rural township of Zaragoza, located in Cartago, Valle del Cauca, Colombia.
