2012 Welsh Local Elections
The 2012 Welsh local elections took place on 3 May 2012 to elect members of all twenty-two Welsh local government, local authorities in Wales. They were held alongside 2012 United Kingdom local elections, other local elections in the United Kingdom. The previous elections were held in 2008 Welsh local elections, 2008. The Labour Party (UK), Labour Party made gains at the expense of the other three major parties and of independents. Labour won majority control of ten councils—up eight from the 2008 local elections—while two remained under the control of independents and nine councils had no overall control. Local Government In Wales
Local government in Wales is primarily undertaken by the twenty-two principal councils. The councils are Unitary authority, unitary authorities, meaning they are responsible for providing local government services within their Principal areas of Wales, principal area, including education, social work, environmental protection, and most highway maintenance. The principal areas are divided into Community (Wales), communities, most of which have an elected community council. The services provided by community councils vary, but they will typically maintain public spaces and facilities. Local councils in Wales are elected; the most recent 2022 Welsh local elections, local elections in Wales took place in 2022, and the 2027 Welsh local elections, next are due to take place in 2027. 2013 Isle Of Anglesey County Council Election
An election to the Isle of Anglesey County Council was held as part of the 2013 United Kingdom local elections and took place on 2 May 2013. Anglesey was the only Welsh authority voting in 2013, the election having been postponed from 2012 by the Welsh Government, in order to allow an electoral review to take place. The next full council election took place on 4 May 2017. 2012 Ceredigion County Council Election
The 2012 election to Ceredigion County Council was held on 3 May 2012 along with elections to 20 of the other 21 local authorities in Wales (all except Anglesey), community council elections in Wales and other elections elsewhere in the United Kingdom. It was followed by the 2017 election. All 42 council seats were up for election. The previous council was controlled by Independents in coalition with the Liberal Democrat group and the single Labour member. Since 2008, there had been two by-elections in Aberystwyth, Rheidol and Ciliau Aeron which were both won by Plaid Cymru. Ceredigion County Council
Ceredigion County Council () is the governing body for the county of Ceredigion, since 1996 one of the unitary authorities of Wales. The council's main offices are in Aberaeron. History The current council was created on 1 April 1996 under the Local Government (Wales) Act 1994, replacing Ceredigion District Council and also taking over county-level functions in the area from Dyfed County Council, which was abolished. The 1994 act specified that the new authority was to have both an English and a Welsh name: Cardiganshire / Sir Aberteifi. The new authority was elected in 1995, but acted as a shadow authority alongside the outgoing district and county councils until the new arrangements took effect the following year. During that time, the shadow authority requested a change of name from Cardiganshire / Sir Aberteifi to Ceredigion for both languages. 2012 Carmarthenshire County Council Election
The fifth election to Carmarthenshire County Council was held on 1 May 2012. It was preceded by the 2008 election and was followed by the 2017 election. Plaid Cymru won 28 seats whilst Labour and the Independents won 23 each. The main feature of the election was a Labour recovery in the Llanelli area, and to some extent in the Gwendraeth and Ammanford area also, mainly at the expense of Independent candidates. Plaid Cymru lost ground to Labour in the Llanelli area but gained seats elsewhere, becoming the largest party. An Independent-Labour coalition was again formed, but with Labour as the leading partner. As a result, Kevin Madge replaced Meryl Gravell as the leader of the council. Madge resigned as leader of the council in May 2015, having lost the leadership of the Labour group. Two days later it was announced that Plaid Cymru would from a coalition with the Independents. Carmarthenshire County Council
Carmarthenshire County Council ( or ''Cyngor Sir Gaerfyrddin'') is the local authority for the county of Carmarthenshire, Wales. It provides a range of services including education, planning, transport, social services and public safety. The council is one of twenty-two unitary authorities that came into existence on 1 April 1996 under the provisions of the Local Government (Wales) Act 1994. It took over local government functions previously provided by the three district councils of District of Carmarthen, Carmarthen, Dinefwr Borough Council, Dinefwr, and District of Llanelli, Llanelli, as well as the county-level services in the area from Dyfed County Council, all of which councils were abolished at the same time. 2012 Bridgend County Borough Council Election
The 2012 Bridgend County Borough Council election took place on 3 May 2012 to elect members of Bridgend County Borough Council in Wales. This was the same day as other 2012 United Kingdom local elections. Result With a 34.99% turnout of the electorate, the Labour Party won an additional 12 seats. This gave the Labour Group an overall majority, which they had not had for the previous eight years. However, Labour's council cabinet member, Alana Davies, lost her seat (Porthcawl East) to an Independent candidate. The Conservatives retained only the Newton seat, losing five councillors. Bridgend County Borough Council () is the governing body for Bridgend County Borough, one of the principal areas of Wales. History Bridgend County Borough and its council came into effect from 1 April 1996, following the '' Local Government (Wales) Act 1994''. Bridgend County Borough Council largely replaced Ogwr Borough Council, though St Brides Major, Ewenny and Wick were transferred from Ogwr to the Vale of Glamorgan. In November 2014 the council voted to propose a merger with the neighbouring Vale of Glamorgan Council, though this was rejected by the Welsh Government's Public Services Minister, Leighton Andrews, as not meeting the criteria to be able to proceed.
