2011 Little Buffalo Oil Spill
The Little Buffalo oil spill on April 29, 2011, resulted in the discharge of 28,000 barrels of oil in an isolated stretch of boreal forest in northern Alberta, about ten kilometres from Little Buffalo, Alberta. The spill was caused by rain then damaging the pipes in the Rainbow Pipeline system, owned by Plains Midstream Canada, a unit of Plains All American Pipeline. It was the largest oil spill in Alberta in 36 years. The local school was closed following the oil spill due to concerns about the effects of fumes. The 44-year-old Rainbow Pipeline carries an average of 187,000 barrels a day from Zama, Alberta to Edmonton. Little Buffalo, a Lubicon Cree community of about 350 people, is approximately ten kilometres from the spill site. Local news reports stated that many of the 125 children attending the local school began complaining of headaches, dizziness and nausea around 9:30 a.m. on April 29. MV Rena
MV ''Rena'' was a container ship owned by the Greece, Greek shipping company Costamare, Costamare Inc. through one of its subsidiaries, Daina Shipping Co. The ship was built in 1990 as ''ZIM America'' for the Israeli shipping company Zim Integrated Shipping Services, Zim by Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft, Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft AG in Kiel, Germany. She was renamed ''Andaman Sea'' in 2007 and had sailed under her current name and owner since 2010. On 5 October 2011, due to navigation errors near the Astrolabe Reef, the ''Rena'' ran aground near Tauranga, New Zealand, resulting in an 2011 Tauranga oil spill, oil spill. Over the span of several months, she had been battered by consistent heavy winds and rough seas and on 8 January 2012 the ''Rena'' broke in two after a particularly harsh night of bad weather. Rena Oil Spill
The ''Rena'' oil spill occurred off the coast of Tauranga, New Zealand in October 2011. The spill was caused by the grounding of on the Astrolabe Reef. The ''Rena'' was a container ship and cargo vessel owned by the Greek shipping company Costamare Inc., through one of its subsidiary companies Daina Shipping. The spill has been described as New Zealand's worst maritime environmental disaster. Sequence of events On Wednesday, 5 October 2011, at 2:20 AM (Tuesday, 4 October 13:20 UTC) while sailing in clear weather from Napier to Tauranga, at a speed of , ''Rena'' ran aground on Astrolabe Reef. The ship was carrying 1,368 containers, eight of which contained hazardous materials, as well as 1,700 tonnes of heavy fuel oil and 200 tonnes of marine diesel oil. Yuracaré People
Yuracaré (also called Yurujare, Yurucare) are Bolivian indigenous people living on 2,500 square kilometres along the Chapare River watershed in Cochabamba Department and Beni Department, in the Bolivian Lowlands of the Amazon Basin. The Yuracaré reside not far from Santa Cruz de la Sierra and Cochabamba, among the forests and plains near the Andes. They are among the residents of the Yuracaré Native Community Land (TCO), the Yuqui TCO, the Isiboro Sécure National Park and Indigenous Territory, the Chiman Indigenous Territory, and the Multiethnic Indigenous Territory I. The Yuracare language is a language isolate, and is believed to be spoken in Bolivia by between 500 and 2,500 people. Isiboro Sécure National Park And Indigenous Territory
Isiboro Sécure National Park and Indigenous Territory (''Territorio Indígena y Parque Nacional Isiboro Secure,'' TIPNIS) is a protected area and Native Community Land in Bolivia situated between the north of the Cochabamba Department and the south of the Beni Department ( Chapare, Moxos, and Marbán provinces). It protects part of the Bolivian Yungas ecoregion. The indigenous people living within the park belong to the Tsimané, Yuracaré, and Mojeño-Trinitario peoples. The southern portion of the park has been colonized by agricultural settlers, primarily coca farmers, since the 1970s. The Bolivian government estimates that 10% of the park has been deforested by their presence. Villa Tunari – San Ignacio De Moxos Highway
The Villa Tunari – San Ignacio de Moxos Highway, also known as the Cochabamba–Beni Highway is a road project in Bolivia connecting the towns of Villa Tunari (in Cochabamba Department) and San Ignacio de Moxos (in Beni Department). It would provide the first direct highway link between the two departments. The project has an expected overall cost of $415 million and extends , divided into three segments: Segment I from Villa Tunari to Isinuta (), Segment II from Isinuta to Monte Grande (), and Segment III from Monte Grande to San Ignacio de Moxos ().
