2009 United States Gubernatorial Elections
United States gubernatorial elections were held on November 3, 2009, in the states of New Jersey and Virginia, as well as in the Commonwealth (United States insular area), U.S. commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands on November 7, 2009. Both state governorships were previously held by Democratic Party (United States), Democrats elected in 2005 United States gubernatorial elections, 2005, and both were won by Republican Party (United States), Republicans in 2009; the local Covenant Party (Northern Mariana Islands), Covenant Party maintained control of the governorship of the Marianas. Janice Kay Brewer (''née'' Drinkwine; born September 26, 1944) is an American politician who served as the 22nd governor of Arizona from 2009 to 2015, as a member of the Republican Party (United States), Republican Party. Benigno Fitial
Benigno Repeki Fitial (born November 27, 1945) is a Northern Marianan politician who served as the seventh governor of the Northern Mariana Islands. The second longest-serving governor in CNMI history, Fitial was elected on November 6, 2005, assumed office on January 9, 2006, and was re-elected to a (five-year) second term in 2009. He was impeached by the CNMI House of Representatives on February 11, 2013, and was scheduled to face trial before the CNMI Senate to determine if he should be removed from office. He resigned on February 20, 2013, after 7 years, 1 month, and 11 days in office. Fitial founded the Covenant Party in 2001 after leaving the Republican Party. Creigh Deeds
Robert Creigh Deeds (; born January 4, 1958) is an American lawyer and politician serving as a member of the Senate of Virginia representing the 11th district since 2024, and previously the 25th district since 2001. Previously, he was the Democratic nominee for Attorney General of Virginia in 2005 and Governor of Virginia in 2009. He was defeated in both of those races by Republican Bob McDonnell. The 2005 Virginia gubernatorial election was held on November 8, 2005, to elect the Governor of Virginia. Christopher Jarvis Daggett (born March 7, 1950) is an American businessman who is the president and CEO of the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation, one of the largest foundations in New Jersey. 2009 New Jersey Gubernatorial Election
The 2009 New Jersey gubernatorial election took place on November 3, 2009. Incumbent Democratic governor Jon Corzine ran for a second term against Republican Chris Christie, Independent Christopher Daggett, and nine others, in addition to several write-in candidates. Christie won the election, with about 48.5 percent of the vote, to 44.9 percent for Corzine and 5.8 percent for Daggett. He assumed office on January 19, 2010. 2005 New Jersey Gubernatorial Election
The 2005 New Jersey gubernatorial election was a race to determine the governor of New Jersey. It was held on November 8, 2005. Democratic governor Richard Codey, who replaced Governor Jim McGreevey in 2004 after his resignation, did not run for election for a full term of office. The primary election was held on June 7, 2005. U.S. senator Jon Corzine won the Democratic nomination without serious opposition.
