2008 Romanian Legislative Election
Parliamentary elections were held in Romania on 30 November 2008. The Democratic Liberal Party (Romania), Democratic Liberal Party (PDL) won three more seats than PSD in the Chamber of Deputies (Romania), Chamber of Deputies and the Senate of Romania, Senate, although the alliance headed by the Social Democratic Party (Romania), Social Democratic Party (PSD) won more votes and a fractionally higher vote share. The two parties subsequently formed a governing coalition with Emil Boc of the PDL as Prime Minister. Electoral system President Traian Băsescu had wanted to introduce a single-winner two-round system, two-round electoral system before this election, but a 2007 Romanian electoral system referendum, 2007 referendum on the proposal failed due to insufficient turnout. Ștefan Iordache
Ștefan Iordache (; 3 February 1941 – 14 September 2008) was a Romanian actor. Born in Calafat, Dolj County, he spent his childhood there before moving to the Rahova neighborhood of Bucharest. He failed being admitted into medical school, worked for a while as an accountant, and then enrolled in the I.L. Caragiale Institute of Theatre and Film Arts (IATC). In 2000, Iordache was awarded the National Order of Faithful Service, Officer rank. In 2006, he was voted the best actor in Romania. He died of leukemia, aged 67, in Vienna, Austria, and was buried with military honors in Gruiu, Ilfov County. Ilarion Ciobanu
Ilarion Ciobanu (; 28 October 1931 – 7 September 2008) was a Romanian actor. He has been described as "a legend" in the press and the last true Romanian comic. Biography Ciobanu was born in Ciucur, Tighina County, Kingdom of Romania (now Moldova), in a family with six brothers. When he was 8, his father, Vlase, a longshoreman in the Port of Constanța, died in an accident. His mother, Olga, moved to Constanța, where she had to work as a cook at a hospital to support her children, two of whom would die due to illness. From age 12, Ciobanu held a variety of jobs: he worked as a longshoreman, farmer, tractor driver, miner, digger, carpenter, sailor, and fisherman. He distinguished himself as a volunteer at the building of the Bumbești– Livezeni railroad; as a dump truck driver, he transported stone from Ovidiu for the construction of the Danube–Black Sea Canal. Elena Leușteanu
Elena Leușteanu-Popescu (later Teodorescu, 4 July 1935 – 16 August 2008) was a Romanian artistic gymnast who competed at the 1956, 1960 and 1964 Olympics. During her career she won three Olympic bronze medals, one world bronze medal and five continental silver medals. She was the first Romanian artistic gymnast to win an individual Olympic medal (in 1956). Early years As a teenager Leușteanu showed talents in handball, athletics, cross-country skiing and gymnastics. In 1949 she won a junior national title in athletics triathlon. In 1953, when she was a member of the national athletics team, she had her best results at 5.14 m in the long jump and 1.43 m in the high jump. Mihaela Mitrache (aka Mihaela Mitraki; July 8, 1955 – February 18, 2008) was a Romanian movie and theatre actress. Biography Born in Bucharest, she graduated from the I.L. Caragiale Institute of Theatre and Film Arts (IATC) in Bucharest in 1978, where she was a student in actor Marin Moraru's class. Ștefan Niculescu
Ștefan Niculescu (July 31, 1927 – January 22, 2008) was a Romanian composer. Niculescu was born in Moreni, DâmboviÈ›a County. He was credited with introducing his own brand of heterophony, a technique based on superimposing melodic material onto variations of itself in order to create textures that are propelled by thematic energy as well as by the more common textural factors of density and levels of activity. This creative approach bears similarities with György Ligeti's micropolyphony, but important aesthetic and stylistic differences set them apart. Niculescu's work as a teacher made him a mentor to a whole generation of younger Romanian composers, among them Costin Miereanu, HoraÈ›iu Rădulescu, and . In the 1970s he contributed to the popularization of modern music by organizing public listenings in Bucharest together with Șerban Stănciulescu.
