This is a list of notable events in the history of LGBTQ rights that took place in the year 2007. Events January * 1 ** Registered partnerships begin in Switzerland. ** Equality Act (Sexual Orientation) Regulations comes into effect in Northern Ireland. * January 11 – The Mexican northern state of Coahuila, which borders Texas, passes (20–13) a bill legalizing same-sex civil unions, under the name ''Pacto Civil de Solidaridad'' (Civil Union Pact). After a similar measure was approved in Mexico City in November 2006. February * 28 – Equalised age of consent comes into effect in United Kingdom territory of Jersey. Registered Partnership In Switzerland
Same-sex marriage has been legal in Switzerland since 1 July 2022. Legislation to open marriage to same-sex couples passed the Swiss Parliament in December 2020. The law was challenged in a referendum on 26 September 2021 by opponents of same-sex marriage and was approved with the support of 64% of voters and a majority in all 26 cantons. The law went into force on 1 July 2022. A provision of the law permitting same-sex marriages performed abroad to be recognised in Switzerland took effect on 1 January 2022. Switzerland was the seventeenth country in Europe and the 30th in the world to allow same-sex couples to marry. Switzerland allowed registered partnerships for same-sex couples from 1 January 2007, following a 2005 referendum. These partnerships provided most, but not all, of the rights and benefits of marriage.
