Events January *1 January **'' 2000 Today'', the marathon 28-hour live broadcast to celebrate the dawn of the new millennium, ends at 1:30pm. **Launch of '' Castaway 2000'' on BBC One, a reality television show billed as a bold experiment for the new millennium. Thirty-six men, women and children from the British public, are placed on Taransay for a year. Taransay is a remote Scottish island in the Outer Hebrides and the group must build a sustainable self-sufficient community. The programme ends on New Year's Day 2001. **Channel 4 airs '' The Biggest Breakfast Ever'', an eight-hour overnight millennium special with Johnny Vaughan and Liza Tarbuck. Sky One
Sky One was a British pay television channel operated and owned by Sky Group (a division of Comcast). Originally launched on 26 April 1982 as Satellite Television, it was Europe's first satellite and non- terrestrial channel. From 31 July 1989, it became Sky One and broadcast exclusively in the United Kingdom and Ireland as British Sky Broadcasting's flagship channel. It existed until 1 September 2021, when it closed down as part of a restructuring with its EPG position taken by Sky Showcase and much of its content library moved to Sky Max. ''SpongeBob SquarePants'' is an American animated television series, animated comedy television series created by marine science educator and animator Stephen Hillenburg for Nickelodeon. It first aired as a sneak peek after the 1999 Kids' Choice Awards on May 1, 1999, and officially premiered on July 17, 1999. It chronicles the adventures of SpongeBob SquarePants (character), SpongeBob SquarePants and his aquatic friends in the underwater city of Bikini Bottom. Many of the series' ideas originated in ''The Intertidal Zone'', an unpublished educational comic book Hillenburg created in 1989 to teach his students about undersea life. Kevin Kennedy (actor)
Kevin Kennedy (born Kevin Patrick Williams; 4 September 1961) is an English actor and musician, best known for playing Curly Watts for 20 years on ITV's long-running soap opera ''Coronation Street''. Early life Kennedy was born Kevin Patrick Williams on 4 September 1961, in Wythenshawe, Manchester. He attended St. Paul's Catholic High School and was a member of Manchester Youth Theatre. Kennedy later studied drama at Manchester Polytechnic. Career Kennedy was in the band the ''Paris Valentinos'' with Johnny Marr and Andy Rourke, who later formed half of The Smiths. Between 1983 and 2003, Kennedy played the character of Norman "Curly" Watts in the TV soap ''Coronation Street''. Curly Watts
Norman "Curly" Watts is a fictional character from the British ITV soap opera ''Coronation Street'', from 1983 to 2003, and in a few spin-off DVDs in 2010. He was portrayed throughout by Kevin Kennedy. Most of Curly's storylines dealt with his repeated failure to form a successful romantic relationship. His nickname resulted from him having straight, lank hair and getting into rows over money, mainly in 1996. His hobby was astronomy and he installed a telescope in the loft of his house. Raquel Watts
Raquel Watts (also Wolstenhulme) is a fictional character from the British ITV soap opera ''Coronation Street'', played by Sarah Lancashire from 23 January 1991 until 15 November 1996. Lancashire returned on 2 January 2000 for one episode. Creation and characterisation Raquel was created by ''Coronation Street'' writer John Stevenson. His starting point was Bettabuys supermarket—a Northern "everyman" chain—and a conceptualisation of characters that might populate it. A Miss Bettabuy competition was suggested as a humorous storyline, with comedy derived from the contradiction between a beauty contest and the "prosaic and mundane" setting of Bettabuys. From this, the name Raquel Wolstenhulme was devised, contrasting the glamorous Hollywood connotations of 'Raquel' with the down-to-earth Northern surname 'Wolstenhulme'. Sarah-Jane Abigail Lancashire (born 10 October 1964) is an English actress. Known for her work in television and theatre, she has received numerous accolades over a career spanning four decades, including three British Academy Television Awards and a nomination for an Olivier Award. Qunu
Qunu () is a Xhosa rural village in South Africa's Eastern Cape Province, south-west of Mthatha on the N2 national route. The Mandela family Former President of South Africa, Nelson Mandela was born near Qunu in the village Mvezo next to the Mbhashe River. He grew up in Qunu after his father was deposed as the chief of Mvezo. After his retirement, Mandela returned to Qunu. In his autobiography, ''Long Walk to Freedom'', Mandela describes Qunu as the place where he spent the happiest moments of his childhood. The remains of four of Mandela's children were originally buried here, but were exhumed by one of his grandsons, Mandla Mandela. Mandla reburied the remains in Mvezo, the village of which he was chief. On 3 July 2013 the Eastern Cape high court ruled that the remains should be moved back to Qunu.

Tommy Walsh (born 18 December 1956) is an English television personality, presenter and celebrity builder best known for the gardening and do-it-yourself television shows ''Ground Force'' (1997–2005) and ''Challenge Tommy Walsh'' (2002–2005).
