Sadler's Wells Ballet
The Royal Ballet is a British internationally renowned classical ballet company, based at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden, London, England. The largest of the five major ballet companies in Great Britain, the Royal Ballet was founded in 1931 by Dame Ninette de Valois. It became the resident ballet company of the Royal Opera House in 1946, and has purpose-built facilities within these premises. It was granted a royal charter in 1956, becoming recognised as Britain's flagship ballet company. The Royal Ballet was one of the foremost ballet companies of the 20th century, and continues to be one of the world's most famous ballet companies to this day, generally noted for its artistic and creative values. Cinderella (Prokofiev)
''Cinderella'' (, tr. ''Zolushka''; ) Op. 87, is a ballet composed by Sergei Prokofiev to a scenario by Nikolai Volkov. It is one of his most popular and melodious compositions, and has inspired a great many choreographers since its inception. The piece was composed between 1940 and 1944. Part way through writing it Prokofiev broke off to write his opera '' War and Peace''. The premiere of ''Cinderella'' was conducted by Yuri Fayer on 21 November, 1945, at the Bolshoi Theatre, with choreography by Rostislav Zakharov and Galina Ulanova in the title role. ''Cinderella'' is notable for its jubilant music, lush scenery, and for the comic double-roles of the stepmother and the two stepsisters (which can be performed in travesti), more mad than bad in this treatment. Alexander Fridlender
Alexander Grigoryevitch Fridlender (; 2/15 July 1906 – 13 September 1980) was a Soviet composer, pianist and conductor, Professor at the Urals Mussorgsky State Conservatoire. Career Fridlender was born in Saint Petersburg. He studied at the Leningrad Central Music College (1925–1929) and graduated from the Leningrad Conservatory in 1933. He then worked as the conductor of the Voronezh Radio Symphony Orchestra in 1934–1935, the Odessa Opera and Ballet Theater (1936). After that he moved to Sverdlovsk. He spent the rest of his life there. Fridlender conducted the orchestra of the Sverdlovsk State Philharmonic Hall (1939–1941, 1947–1974) and the State Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre (1943–1947). The Stone Flower (Fridlender)
''The Stone Flower'' (), is a ballet by the Soviet composer Alexander Fridlender, based on the Russian Ural folk tale ''The Stone Flower'' by Pavel Bazhov. Iosif Keller wrote the Russian language libretto. Background The first version of ''The Stone Flower'' was created by the Ural composer Alexander Fridlender in 1944. It premiered at the State Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre in Sverdlovsk. Alexander Fridlender himself was the conductor, with Konstantin Muller as the ballet master, and Vladimir Lyudmilin as the stage manager. It was met with significant praise by critics. Bazhov who was at first sceptical about the ballet adaptations of his stories, watched the ballet and liked it in the end. Another production was made in 1947. Rambert (known as Rambert Dance Company before 2014) is a leading British dance company. Formed at the start of the 20th century as a classical ballet company, it exerted a great deal of influence on the development of dance in the United Kingdom, and today, as a contemporary dance company, continues to be one of the world's most renowned dance companies. It has previously been known as the Ballet Club, and the Ballet Rambert. Benjamin Britten
Edward Benjamin Britten, Baron Britten of Aldeburgh (22 November 1913 – 4 December 1976) was an English composer, conductor, and pianist. He was a central figure of 20th-century British music, with a range of works including opera, other vocal music, orchestral and chamber pieces. His best-known works include the opera ''Peter Grimes'' (1945), the ''War Requiem'' (1962) and the orchestral showpiece ''The Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra'' (1945). Britten was born in Lowestoft, Suffolk, the son of a dentist. He showed talent from an early age. He studied at the Royal College of Music in London and privately with the composer Frank Bridge. Walter Gore
Walter Gore (8 October 1910 – 16 April 1979) was a British ballet dancer, company director and choreographer. Early life Walter Gore was born in Waterside, East Ayrshire Scotland in 1910 into a theatrical family. From 1924, he studied acting at the Italia Conti Academy, and dance with Léonide Massine and with Marie Rambert. Career Gore was a dancer with Ballet Rambert from 1930 to 1935. He returned as a choreographer in 1938 with his first ballet ''Final Waltz''. In 1944, whilst on leave from Army duty in France, Gore created a ballet based on Benjamin Britten's Simple Symphony also entitled '' Simple Symphony'' for the Ballet Rambert. The work was largely created on Sally Gilmour and Margaret Scott. Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky ( ; 7 May 1840 – 6 November 1893) was a Russian composer during the Romantic period. He was the first Russian composer whose music made a lasting impression internationally. Tchaikovsky wrote some of the most popular concert and theatrical music in the classical repertoire, including the ballets '' Swan Lake'' and ''The Nutcracker'', the '' 1812 Overture'', his First Piano Concerto, Violin Concerto, the ''Romeo and Juliet'' Overture-Fantasy, several symphonies, and the opera ''Eugene Onegin''. Willam Christensen
Willam Farr Christensen (August 27, 1902 – October 14, 2001)Was born Christian William Christensen, until his mother changed his name to William Farr Christensen, to include her maiden name. As a professional dancer in San Francisco, Christensen dropped the second "i" in his name to become Willam, which he thought fit better with the European art form of ballet. This and his date of birth is found in was an American ballet dancer, choreographer and founder of the San Francisco Ballet and Ballet West in Salt Lake City, Utah. He is known for bringing the complete version of the Russian ballet ''The Nutcracker'' to the United States, as well as staging the first American performances of ''Swan Lake'' and ''Coppélia''.
