1904 Wyoming Gubernatorial Special Election
The 1904 Wyoming gubernatorial election was held on November 8, 1904. Shortly after he began his second term in 1903, Governor DeForest Richards died in office, elevating Secretary of State Fenimore Chatterton to the Governorship and triggering a special election in 1904 to fill the balance of Richards's term. Chatterton ran for re-election, but was defeated for renomination at the Republican convention by Bryant Butler Brooks, Bryant B. Brooks. Former Congressman John Eugene Osborne, John E. Osborne, the former Territorial Governor, was nominated by the Democratic Party. Aided by President Theodore Roosevelt's landslide victory over Democrat Alton B. Preston Lea
Preston Lea (November 12, 1841 – December 4, 1916) was an American businessman and politician from Wilmington, in New Castle County, Delaware. He was a member of the Republican Party who served as Governor of Delaware. Early life and family Lea was born at Brandywine Village, now a part of Wilmington, Delaware, son of William and Jane Scott Lovett Lea. His ancestors came to Pennsylvania with William Penn. His grandfather, Thomas Lea, built a flour mill on the Brandywine Creek in 1811. In 1870, he married Adelaide Moore; they had three children: Claudia Wright, Alice Moore, and Ethel Mildred. In 1897, he married again, to Eliza Naudain Corbit, with whom he had one child, Louise Corbit. Their home for many years was at 2315 17th Street in Wilmington. Napoleon Bonaparte Broward (April 19, 1857 – October 1, 1910) was an American river pilot, captain, and politician. He was elected as the 19th governor of the U.S. state of Florida, serving from January 3, 1905, to January 5, 1909. He was most widely known for his major project to drain the Everglades, to recover land for agricultural cultivation. As governor, he built alliances with the federal government to gain funds for this project. In 1915, the newly formed Broward County was named in his honor.
