A lieutenant governor is an official in state governments of 45 out of 50 of the United States. In most cases, the lieutenant governor is the highest officer of state after the governor, standing in for that officer when they are absent from the state or temporarily incapacitated. In the event a governor dies, resigns or is removed from office, the lieutenant governor typically becomes governor. In 26 states, the governor and lieutenant governor are elected on the same ticket, ensuring that they come from the same political party. Biography Early years Davis Hanson Waite was born on April 9, 1825, in Jamestown, New York, to Joseph Waite and Olive Davis Waite. He studied law and graduated from Jamestown Academy. Henry Markham
Henry Harrison Markham (November 16, 1840October 9, 1923) was an American lawyer and Republican politician. He was the 18th governor of California (1891–1895), and represented California's 6th congressional district during the 49th United States Congress (1885–1887). Earlier in life, he served as a Union Army officer in the American Civil War. Early life Markham was born in Wilmington, New York, on November 16, 1840. He attended the common schools of his hometown and Wheeler's Academy in Vermont. He moved to Wisconsin in 1861. Career During the Civil War, Markham enlisted as a private in Company G, 32nd Wisconsin Infantry Regiment; he was promoted to second lieutenant. Markham was part of General William Tecumseh Sherman's March to the Sea in 1864. He was wounded at the Battle of Rivers' Bridge in 1865, and discharged. William Meade Fishback (November 5, 1831February 9, 1903) was a lawyer and politician who served as the List of Governors of Arkansas, 17th Governor of Arkansas from 1893 to 1895 and United States Senate, U.S. Senator-elect for Arkansas.
