William Hogan (author)
William Hogan (born 1937) is an American novelist and film producer. Life Hogan was born in Kansas City and grew up in California. He has graduate degrees in English, theology, and philosophy. He has worked as a high school English teacher, a television executive, and movie producer. Works Hogan is best known for his bildungsroman, coming-of-age novel ''The Quartzsite Trip'' (Atheneum Books, 1980). The book, set largely in the town of Quartzsite, Arizona, is a cult classic of which Kirkus Reviews said, "[T]here's an innocence of time and culture laid out here that is sweet and true: the trip is irresistible, as good as ''American Graffiti'', and maybe--for its sculpted, more than nostalgic shape--even better." His second novel, entitled ''The Year of the Mongoose'' (Atheneum, 1981) was not nearly as well-received, with one critic dubbing it "a tired, toothless, virtually plotless satire on the network TV biz". William Hogan (July 17, 1792 – November 25, 1874) was an American merchant and politician who served one term as a United States representative from New York from 1831 to 1833. He was the first member of the United States Congress of documented Asian ancestry. Biography He was born in the parish of St. Paul's Convent Garden, London, England, on July 17, 1792. His father, Michael Hogan, was an Irish merchant and shipowner, who sailed with his family between Britain, South Africa, India, China and Australia. Hogan's mother was Frances Richardson Hogan, the illegitimate daughter of William Richardson, a merchant based in Bombay who Michael Hogan worked with and Anna Lacy, Richardson's housekeeper who was of at least partial native Indian descent. In 1803, Hogan senior and his family settled in New York City. Hogan pursued classical studies and graduated from Columbia College in 1811. William Hogan III is an American retired ice hockey center who was an All-American for Boston College. Career Like his father before him, Bill Hogan played college hockey for the Eagles under head coach John Kelley. In his sophomore season, Hogan helped the Eagles compile a 19–5–1 record, but the team was passed over for the NCAA Tournament. The very next season BC joined with 27 other eastern teams to form ECAC Hockey and the Eagles set their sights on another postseason bid. Hogan led the Eagles in goals (24) and points (45) and was named an All-American and First Team All-ECAC. The Eagles made the inaugural conference tournament as the 5th seed and were defeated in the quarterfinal. In his senior season, Hogan increased his point production again, rising to 59 points and leading the Eagles into the conference tournament as the No. 1 seed.
