Big Bend Slider
The Big Bend slider (''Trachemys gaigeae''), also called the Mexican Plateau slider, is a species of aquatic turtle in the family Emydidae. The species is endemic to the Southwestern United States and northern Mexico. Taxonomy The species ''Trachemys gaigeae'' was first described by professor of zoology at the University of Michigan, Dr. Norman Edouard Hartweg, in 1939, as a subspecies, ''Pseudemys scripta gaigeae''. Later, it was assigned to the genus ''Chrysemys'', then to the genus ''Trachemys''. Most recently, it was granted full species status, though many sources still refer to it by its various synonyms. The Nazas slider (''T. hartwegi'') of the Nazas River in northern Mexico was formerly considered a subspecies of ''T. gaigeae'', but was reclassified as a distinct species by the Turtle Taxonomy Working Group and the Reptile Database in 2021. Norman Edouard Hartweg
Norman Edouard "Kibe" Hartweg (August 20, 1904 – February 16, 1964) was an American herpetologist, Curator of Herpetology for the Museum of Zoology at the University of Michigan, and president of the American Society of Ichthyologists and Herpetologists. He was a specialist in the taxonomy and distribution of turtles, and is honored by having a subspecies of turtle named after him: the western spiny softshell turtle, '' Apalone spinifera hartwegi''. He is also credited with having described several new species, including the Big Bend slider, '' Trachemys gaigeae'', the Oaxacan patchnose snake, '' Salvadora intermedia'', and Dunn's hognose pit viper, '' Porthidium dunni''. Emydidae
Emydidae (Latin ''emys'' (freshwater tortoise) + Ancient Greek εἶδος (''eîdos'', “appearance, resemblance”)) is a family of testudines (turtles) that includes close to 50 species in 10 genera. Members of this family are commonly called terrapins, pond turtles, or marsh turtles. Several species of Asian box turtles were formerly classified in the family; however, revised taxonomy has separated them to a different family ( Geoemydidae). As currently defined, the Emydidae are entirely a Western Hemisphere family, with the exception of two species of pond turtle. Description The upper shell (carapace) of most emydids is the shape of a low arch, although in some species, it is domed. The Reptile Database is a scientific database that collects taxonomic information on all living reptile species (i.e. no fossil species such as dinosaurs). The database focuses on species (as opposed to higher ranks such as families) and has entries for all currently recognized ~13,000 species and their subspecies, although there is usually a lag time of up to a few months before newly described species become available online. Turtle Taxonomy Working Group
The Turtle Taxonomy Working Group (TTWG) is an informal working group of the IUCN/SSC Tortoise and Freshwater Turtle Specialist Group (TFTSG). It is composed of a number of leading turtle Taxonomy (biology), taxonomists, with varying participation by individual participants over the years, some dropping out and others joining. The TTWG has produced an annual checklist of living and recently extinct turtles since 2007, deliberates on proposed changes to turtle taxonomy, and describes its consideration whether to accept, reject, or suspend adoption of proposed changes in a series of annotations to the checklist. Nazas River
The Nazas River is a river located in northern Mexico, in the states of Coahuila and Durango. It is part of the endorheic Bolsón de Mapimí. It is only long, but irrigates an area of in the middle of the desert. The Nazas is also nurtured by the San Juan, Ramos, Potreritos, del Oro, Nazas, Santiago, Tepehuanes and Peñón Blanco rivers. The river starts at the Sierra Madre Occidental. The aboriginal title for this stream is ''Tlahualilo'', coming from the Nahuatl words ''tlalli'' meaning "fertile land" and ''ahualila'', meaning "water for irrigation".
