Byxelkrok
Byxelkrok () is a locality situated on the northern end of Öland, Sweden. A picturesque fishing village in Böda socken, Byxelkrok has a small harbor; tourism is an important source of revenue in summer. The town, on the end of County Road 136 from Ottenby, has a hotel complex, restaurants, and camp sites. In summer, there is a ferry service to Oskarshamn on the mainland, and a boat service to Blå Jungfrun in the Kalmar Strait. The name derives from ''Byskogskroken'', in reference to the bend in the coastline toward the south, to cape Tokenäs, two kilometers south of the Byxelkrok harbor, which formerly had a Viking harbor. According to legend, Viking chieftain Toke landed here but was beaten to death by locals. Blå Jungfrun
Blå Jungfrun, also known as "Blåkulla", in English sometimes rendered literally as The Blue Maiden is a Swedish island in the Baltic Sea. It is situated in the Kalmar Strait, between the mainland province of Småland and the island province of Öland. Administratively, the uninhabited island is part of the municipality of Oskarshamn and covers an area of approximately with a mean height above sea level of . Home to black guillemots and a Swedish National Park since 1926, freedom to roam at Blå Jungfrun is limited with visitors prohibited from staying overnight on the island or making fires. Öland
Öland (, ; ; sometimes written ''Øland'' in other Scandinavian languages, and often ''Oland'' internationally; la, Oelandia) is the second-largest Swedish island and the smallest of the traditional provinces of Sweden. Öland has an area of and is located in the Baltic Sea just off the coast of Småland. The island has 26,000 inhabitants. It is separated from the mainland by the Kalmar Strait and connected to it by the Öland Bridge, which opened on 30 September 1972. Böda socken is a former socken of Åkerbo Hundred on Öland, Sweden. Since 1974, it's part of the Borgholm Municipality on the island of Öland, Sweden. It covers 107 square kilometers and had 773 inhabitants in 2000. History The oldest parts of Böda Church date from the late 12th century, although the church was heavily reconstructed in 1801–03. Böda parish is mentioned in a transcript from about 1320 ("de Bødhum"), and in the Böda missal from the first half of the 14th century ("ecclesie Bødhe"); there is an attestation from 1346 ("in parochiis ... bodha"). Ottenby
Ottenby () is a town on the island of Öland, Sweden, located in Ås parish, Mörbylånga Municipality in Kalmar County. Ottenby is located just north of the southern tip of Öland, over thirty km south of the area's main town, Mörbylånga. Ottenby is also the name of the mansion and a royal demesne, now a nature reserve. Sweden's tallest lighthouse, Långe Jan, is just south of Ottenby. Oskarshamn
Oskarshamn is a coastal city and the seat of Oskarshamn Municipality, Kalmar County, Sweden with 17,258 inhabitants in 2010. History Etymology Döderhultsvik was the original name before a town charter was granted in 1856. The name was then changed to Oscarshamn (meaning: Oscar's port) after the king Oscar I of Sweden. The spelling has later changed to Oskarshamn. Struggle for town charter The location of Oskarshamn was known as Döderhultsvik since the Medieval age. In 1645, the city of Kalmar, to the south, made a request to the Royal Government on holding commerce in the bay there, which was granted, giving it merchancy rights as a ''köping''. Västervik is a city and the seat of Västervik Municipality, Kalmar County, Sweden, with 36,747 inhabitants in 2021. Västervik is one of three coastal towns with a notable population size in the province of Småland. Climate Västervik has a semi-continental type of the oceanic climate ( Cfb) using the -3°C isotherm, and a true humid continental climate (Dfb) using the 0°C isotherm, with vast differences between seasons.
