Burton Joyce Railway Station
Burton Joyce railway station serves the large village of Burton Joyce in Nottinghamshire, England. It lies between Carlton and Lowdham stations on the Nottingham to Lincoln Line. History The builders of the railway faced a good deal of opposition at Burton Joyce, which resulted in the station being outside of the village. The preferred site of the railway company was near to the ''Lord Nelson'' inn, but the innkeeper objected on the grounds that he would have to brew more beer. The vicar of St Helen's Church, Revd. John Rolleston, near whose vicarage the line was to run, objected to the railway on account of the noise. Finally, the promoters of the railway bought him out and built a new vicarage for him. The line was engineered by George Stephenson and was opened by the Midland Railway on 3 August 1846. The contractors for the line were ''Craven and Son'' of Newark and Nottingham. Burton Joyce
Burton Joyce is a large village and civil parish in the Gedling district of Nottinghamshire, England, 7 miles (11 km) east of Nottingham, between Stoke Bardolph to the south and Bulcote to the north-east. The A612 links it to Carlton and Netherfield to the south-west and Lowdham to the north-east. Initially the site of an Iron age fort, it was occupied by Norman nobility, who founded St Helen's Church. From being a farming community, Burton Joyce grew in the early Industrial Revolution, earning repute up to the 1920s for its textile products. Many of today's 3,443 inhabitants commute to work or school in Nottingham. It forms with Stoke Bardoph and Bulcote the Trent Valley ward of Gedling, with two councillors. Midland Railway
The Midland Railway (MR) was a railway company in the United Kingdom from 1844. The Midland was one of the largest railway companies in Britain in the early 20th century, and the largest employer in Derby, where it had its headquarters. It amalgamated with several other railways to create the London, Midland and Scottish Railway at grouping in 1922. The Midland had a large network of lines emanating from Derby, stretching to London St Pancras, Manchester, Carlisle, Birmingham, and the South West. The Nottingham–Lincoln line, marketed as the Castle line, is a railway line in central England, running north-east from Nottingham to Lincoln. St Helen's Church is a Grade I listed parish church in the Church of England in Burton Joyce, Nottinghamshire, England. History It was built in the 13th century. The south aisle dates from 1725. The arcades were rebuilt in 1878 by T. H. Wyatt. It is in a joint parish with two other churches: * Holy Trinity Church, Bulcote * St Luke's Church, Stoke Bardolph Organ Records exist of an organ being installed in 1879 by Lloyd and Dudgeon.
