Burnsville, North Carolina
Burnsville is a town that serves as the county seat of Yancey County, North Carolina, United States. Located in the Blue Ridge Mountains of western North Carolina, sits in the shadow of Mount Mitchell, the highest peak in the Eastern Continental United States. The population was 1,612 at the 2020 United States census, 2020 census. History The town was founded on March 6, 1834, from land conveyed by John "Yellow Jacket" Bailey, and it was named after Captain Otway Burns, a naval hero of the War of 1812. In 1909, a statue of Captain Burns was given to the town by his grandson, Walter Francis Burns Sr., and it was set on a granite pedestal in the center of the town square. It has an inscription that reads, in part, "He Guarded Well Our Seas, Let Our Mountains Honor Him." Due to damages, the original statue was replaced in the early 2000s. Nu-Wray Inn
The Nu Wray Inn is an historic hotel located at Burnsville, Yancey County, North Carolina. It was built in 1833 at the time Yancey County was formed and a year before Burnsville was established. It was originally built of logs and had eight bedrooms and a dining room and kitchen. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. Thomas Wolfe spent the night there in 1929 when he was a witness at a murder trial in Burnsville. Elvis Presley and William Sidney Porter (O. Henry) were also guests. It was owned by the same family for a century until the death of Wray family patriarch Rush Wray. Writing about the Inn in 1941 the journalist Jonathan W. Black Mountains (North Carolina)
The Black Mountains are a mountain range in western North Carolina, in the southeastern United States. They are part of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Blue Ridge Province of the Southern Appalachian Mountains. The Black Mountains are the highest mountains in the Eastern United States. Cane River (North Carolina)
The Cane River is a river in Yancey County, North Carolina. It originates from the confluence of Beech Nursery Creek, off the western slope of Mount Mitchell, and Blue Sea Creek, off the northeastern slope of Blackstock Knob, in the Black Mountains. A tributary in the French Broad River basin, it flows northward to join the North Toe River, forming the Nolichucky River. Dams The Cane River had one dam that existed, from 1908 to 2016, named the Cane River Dam. The reinforced concrete structure was tall and spanned wide, constructed to provide hydroelectric power for Yancey County. In 1940, a flood submerged the dam's powerhouse and in the 1950s the reservoir was drained as the dams' structural integrity declined. By the 1970s, another significant flood caused a partial breech. Yancey County Courthouse
Yancey County Courthouse is a historic courthouse located at Burnsville, Yancey County, North Carolina. It was built in 1908, and is a two-story, Classical Revival style, stuccoed concrete block building faced in stucco. It has a central pedimented entrance pavilion surmounted by a blocky cupola. The building features Corinthian order pilasters and polygonal corner projections. It served as the location for county offices until 1965, when a new courthouse was constructed.
