''The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle and Friends'' (commonly referred to as simply ''Rocky and Bullwinkle'') is an American animated television series that originally aired from November 19, 1959, to June 27, 1964, on the American Broadcasting Company, ABC and NBC television networks. Produced by Jay Ward Productions, the series is structured as a variety show, with the main feature being the serial (radio and television), serialized adventures of the two title characters, the anthropomorphism, anthropomorphic flying squirrel Rocky the Flying Squirrel, Rocket J. ("Rocky") Squirrel and moose Bullwinkle J. Moose. Surreal Humor
Surreal humour (also called surreal comedy, absurdist humour, or absurdist comedy) is a form of humour predicated on deliberate violations of causal reasoning, thus producing events and behaviors that are obviously illogical. Portrayals of surreal humour tend to involve bizarre juxtapositions, incongruity, non-sequiturs, irrational or absurd situations, and expressions of nonsense. Surreal humour grew out of surrealism, a cultural movement developed in the 20th century by French and Belgian artists, who depicted unnerving and illogical scenes while developing techniques to allow the unconscious mind to express itself. The movement itself was foreshadowed by English writers in the 19th century, most notably Lewis Carroll and Edward Lear. Frank Comstock
Frank G. Comstock (September 20, 1922 – May 21, 2013) was an American composer, arranger, conductor, and trombonist. For television, Comstock wrote and arranged music for major situation comedies and variety shows. His theme and incidental music for '' Rocky and His Friends'' (1959–1964) are probably his best-remembered works. Additionally, his music for ''Adam-12'' earned him a 1971 Emmy nomination. Comstock's recording credits include eight Hi-Lo's albums and backing arrangements for major recording stars. His 1962 instrumental album, ''Project: Comstock - Music from Outer Space'' became a classic and was released on CD in 2004. Rocky The Flying Squirrel
Rocket "Rocky" J. Squirrel, also known as Rocky the Flying Squirrel, is one of the two protagonists of the 1959–1964 animated series ''Rocky and His Friends'' and ''The Bullwinkle Show'' (both shows often referred to collectively as '' The Rocky and Bullwinkle Show''), produced by Jay Ward. Rocky is the best friend and ally of the western moose, Bullwinkle. Both Rocky and Bullwinkle were given the middle initial "J" as a reference to Ward. Creation Jay Ward and partner Alex Anderson originally created Rocky as part of ''The Frostbite Falls Review'', a proposed pilot that wasn't developed. Flying Squirrel
Flying squirrels (scientifically known as Pteromyini or Petauristini) are a tribe (biology), tribe of 50 species of squirrels in the family (biology), family Squirrel, Sciuridae. Despite their name, they are not in fact capable of full flight in the same way as birds or bats, but they are able to gliding flight, glide from one tree to another with the aid of a patagium, a furred skin membrane that stretches from wrist to ankle.
