Bubnoff Unit
The Bubnoff unit (abbreviated B) is a unit of speed defined as 1 micron ( micrometer) per year. In other words, 1 B is equal to 1 meter in 1,000,000 years or 1 millimeter in 1 millennium. It was defined in 1969. The Bubnoff unit is employed in geology to measure rates of lowering of earth surfaces due to erosion and is named after the Russian (German-Baltic) geologist Serge von Bubnoff (1888–1957). An erosion speed of 1 B also means that 1 m3 of earth is being removed from an area of 1 km2 in 1 year. Compared to everyday phenomena, erosion is under most circumstances (excluding rapid events like landslides) an extremely slow process, calling for such a specialized unit. For instance, the current average rate of erosion over the Earth's landmasses has been estimated at 30 B (30 m in a million years). There are, however, great regional differences in erosion speed. Serge Von Bubnoff
Sergius Nikolajewitsch von Bubnoff (15 July 1888 in Saint Petersburg – 16 November 1957 in Berlin) was a geologist and geotechnical engineer with Germano-Baltic ancestry who made important contributions to the rebuilding of geological research in East Germany after World War II. Starting in 1922, he was a professor at the University of Breslau. In 1929 he became a professor at the University of Greifswald and in 1950, he started his professorship at the Humboldt-University of Berlin. The Bubnoff unit, which is the unit of measure for the speed of geological processes, is named after him. Donald Duff (geologist And Author)
Peter McLaren Donald Duff FRSE FGS (1927–1998) was a Scottish geologist and academic author. Life Duff was born in Edinburgh the son of the personnel officer to the London & North Eastern Railway. His early life was unsettled due to his father’s frequent job-related relocations. He eventually settled and his first fixed school was Edinburgh High School. A neighbour, Mary Noble FRSE, a plant pathologist, encouraged an interest in plants and agriculture, and on this basis, he entered the University of Edinburgh in 1944. However, he was called up to serve (in the Fleet Air Arm) soon thereafter and not demobbed until 1947. On his return to the University of Edinburgh, he instead decided to study geology, under Professor Arthur Holmes, graduating with a BSc in 1951.
