Bruce Gurney
Bruce Alvin Gurney (8 July 1957 – 20 October 2023) was an American physicist responsible for pioneering advances in magnetic recording. In particular, he was central to the development of the giant magnetoresistance (GMR) sensors first used in hard disk drives in 1997. Education and career Bruce Gurney was born in Oregon, USA, but grew up and was educated in San Diego, California. He attended the Will C. Crawford High School. He received a B.S. in physics from Caltech in 1979 and an M.S. in physics from Cornell in 1982. He completed a Ph.D. at Cornell on surface science in 1987. In 1987, Gurney joined IBM in San Jose working on thin-film deposition and characterization. He was a coinventor on the original spin-valve (GMR) patent. In 1991, Gurney moved to the IBM Almaden Research Center where he oversaw the transfer of spin-valve technology into development and into manufacturing. A hard disk drive (HDD), hard disk, hard drive, or fixed disk is an electro-mechanical data storage device that stores and retrieves digital data using magnetic storage with one or more rigid rapidly rotating hard disk drive platter, platters coated with magnetic material. Christopher Henry Bajorek (born November 26, 1943) is a data storage engineer noted for his leadership in developing and implementing magnetoresistive sensors into magnetic stripe readers, tape drives and hard disk drives. Bernard Dieny
Bernard Dieny is a research scientist and an entrepreneur. He is Chief Scientist at SPINTEC (Spintronics and Technology of Components), a CEA/CNRS/UGA research laboratory that he co-founded in 2002 in Grenoble, France. Magnetic storage or magnetic recording is the storage of data on a magnetized medium. Magnetic storage uses different patterns of magnetisation in a magnetizable material to store data and is a form of non-volatile memory. Giant Magnetoresistance
Giant magnetoresistance (GMR) is a quantum mechanics, quantum mechanical magnetoresistance effect observed in multilayers composed of alternating ferromagnetic and non-magnetic conductive layers. The 2007 Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded to Albert Fert and Peter Grünberg for the discovery of GMR, which also sets the foundation for the study of spintronics. The effect is observed as a significant change in the electrical resistance depending on whether the magnetization of adjacent ferromagnetic layers are in a parallel or an Antiparallel (electronics), antiparallel alignment. Bit-patterned Media
Patterned media (also known as bit-patterned media or BPM) is a potential future hard disk drive technology to record data in magnetic islands (one bit per island), as opposed to current hard disk drive technology where each bit is stored in within a continuous magnetic film. The islands would be patterned from a precursor magnetic film using nanolithography. It is one of the proposed technologies to succeed perpendicular recording due to the greater storage densities it would enable. BPM was introduced by Toshiba in 2010. Spin-transfer torque (STT) is an effect in which the orientation of a magnetic layer in a magnetic tunnel junction or spin valve can be modified using a spin-polarized current. Charge carriers (such as electrons) have a property known as spin which is a small quantity of angular momentum intrinsic to the carrier. An electric current is generally unpolarized (consisting of 50% spin-up and 50% spin-down electrons); a spin polarized current is one with more electrons of either spin. By passing a current through a thick magnetic layer (usually called the “fixed layer”), one can produce a spin-polarized current. If this spin-polarized current is directed into a second, thinner magnetic layer (the “free layer”), the angular momentum can be transferred to this layer, changing its orientation.
