The Broken River, a minor inland perennial river of the Goulburn River, Goulburn Broken catchment, part of the Murray–Darling basin, is located in the Alpine and Northern Country/North Central regions of the Australian state of Victoria (Australia), Victoria. The headwaters of the Broken River rise in the western slopes of the Victorian Alps, near Bald Hill and descend to flow into the Goulburn River near Shepparton. The river is impounded by the Nillahcootie Dam to create Lake Nillahcootie and Benalla Dam to create Lake Benalla. Location and features The river rises below Bald Hill on the western slopes of the Victorian Alps, within the Shire of Mansfield. Platypus
The platypus (''Ornithorhynchus anatinus''), sometimes referred to as the duck-billed platypus, is a semiaquatic, egg-laying mammal endemic to eastern Australia, including Tasmania. The platypus is the sole living representative or monotypic taxon of its family Ornithorhynchidae and genus ''Ornithorhynchus'', though a number of related species appear in the fossil record. Together with the four species of echidna, it is one of the five extant species of monotremes, mammals that lay eggs instead of giving birth to live young. Like other monotremes, the platypus has a sense of electrolocation, which it uses to detect prey in cloudy water. Geography The watercourse Broken River rises in the Clarke Range in Crediton to the south-east, entering the locality from the locality from the south-east, then flowing west through the locality, exiting to the west ( Eungella). It subsequently flows through the Eungella Dam and ultimately is a tributary of the Bowen River. The Eungella Dam Road enters the locality from the north-west (Eungella), forms part of the western boundary of the locality, before crossing through the locality, exiting to the south (Crediton). The north, east, and south of the locality is within the Eungella National Park, which extends in neighbouring Eungella, Netherdale, and Crediton. Broken River is a club skifield in South Island, New Zealand. Run by the Broken River Ski Club, it is located at about from Christchurch. The skifield claims to often have the longest ski season anywhere in Australasia. Also, by connecting with Craigieburn Valley, it claims to have the largest skiable area in New Zealand, at . The grounds encompass a large, open basin with five ski tows and a skiable range from an altitude of . The difficulty distribution is 10% beginner, 40% intermediate, 50% advanced. Accommodation is in the form of three lodges: the full-service Lyndon Lodge, the more basic 28-bed Broken River Lodge, and the very basic 14-bed White Star Chalet for backpackers.
