Bristol North East (UK Parliament Constituency)
Bristol North East is a borough constituency in the city of Bristol represented in the House of Commons of the UK Parliament since July 2024 by Damien Egan of the Labour Party. Egan had originally been elected at a byelection in February 2024 for the abolished constituency of Kingswood. The constituency was originally created for the 1950 general election, and abolished for the 1983 general election. The conduct of the 1951 election was the subject of an academic study, published as ''Straight Fight'' in 1954 by R. S. Milne and H.C Mackensie. Further to the completion of the 2023 review of Westminster constituencies, the seat was re-established for the 2024 general election. 2024 United Kingdom General Election
The 2024 United Kingdom general election was held on Thursday, 4 July 2024 to elect all 650 members of the House of Commons of the United Kingdom, House of Commons. The opposition Labour Party (UK), Labour Party, led by Keir Starmer, won a landslide victory over the governing Conservative Party (UK), Conservative Party under Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, ending 14 years of Conservative rule. Labour secured 411 seats and a 174-seat majority, the fourth-best showing in the party's history and its best since 2001 United Kingdom general election, 2001. The party's vote share was 33.7%, the lowest of any majority party on record, making this the #Proportionality concerns, least proportional general election in British history. 2024 Kingswood By-election
A by-election took place on 15 February 2024 in the UK Parliament constituency of Kingswood in South Gloucestershire. This followed the resignation of Conservative MP Chris Skidmore, in protest at the UK government's decision to issue more oil and gas licences. Skidmore announced his resignation on 5 January and it was effected three days later. The election was won by Damien Egan of the Labour Party with a 16% swing. The turnout was 37.1%. The by-election took place on the same day as the Wellingborough by-election, also won by Labour from the Conservatives. Constituency The Kingswood constituency in South Gloucestershire had been won by the main party of government since its creation in February 1974, except for 1992. It voted Leave in the 2016 EU referendum by a margin of 58% to 42%. William Coldrick
William Coldrick (20 January 1894 – 15 September 1975) was a Labour Co-operative politician in the United Kingdom. He was elected as Member of Parliament for Bristol North at the 1945 general election. When that constituency was abolished in boundary changes for the 1950 general election, he was returned to Parliament for the new Bristol North East constituency. He was defeated at the 1959 general election by the Conservative and National Liberal candidate Alan Hopkins. He was Chairman of the Co-operative Party from 1945 to 1955 and was Sheriff of Bristol in 1964. He was briefly in prison during the General Strike of 1926 with Arthur Jenkins, the father of Roy Jenkins Roy Harris Jenkins, Baron Jenkins of Hillhead (11 November 1920 – 5 January 2003) was a British politician and writer who served as the sixth President of the European Commission from 1977 to 1981. Mangotsfield
Mangotsfield is a village and former civil parish in the unitary authority area of South Gloucestershire, in the ceremonial county of Gloucestershire, England, to the north-east of Bristol. The village was mentioned in the Domesday Book in 1086 as ''Manegodesfelle'', and as ''Manegodesfeld'' in 1377. Between 1845 and 1966 the village was served by Mangotsfield railway station. Parish Until the 19th century Mangotsfield was the principal settlement in a large ancient parish, which also included the hamlets of Downend and Staple Hill to the west of the village, and Emersons Green, Vinny Green, Blackhorse and Moorend to the north. Staple Hill, Gloucestershire
Staple Hill is a suburb of Bristol, England, lying outside the city boundary in South Gloucestershire, in the ceremonial county of Gloucestershire. It is directly east of Fishponds, south of Downend, west of Mangotsfield and north of Soundwell. History ''Staple'' is a rendering of the Anglo-Saxon/Old English word ''stapol'' or ''staypole'' which meant a post in the sense of an old boundary marker. South Gloucestershire
South Gloucestershire is a unitary authority area in the ceremonial county of Gloucestershire, South West England. Towns in the area include Yate, Chipping Sodbury, Kingswood, Thornbury, Filton, Patchway and Bradley Stoke. The southern part of its area falls within the Greater Bristol urban area surrounding the city of Bristol. South Gloucestershire was created in 1996 to replace the Northavon district of the abolished county of Avon. It is separate from Gloucestershire County Council, but is part of the ceremonial county and shares Gloucestershire's Lord Lieutenant (the Sovereign's representative to the county). Kingswood, South Gloucestershire
Kingswood is a town and civil parish in the South Gloucestershire district of the ceremonial county of Gloucestershire, England. The town is situated east-northeast of Bristol. Broadly speaking, Kingswood spans the area from John Cabot Academy in the west to the A4174 ring road in the east. Some areas which are in close proximity to Kingswood, such as Two Mile Hill and St George East (both located within the City of Bristol) and parts of Hanham and Warmley Hill are often considered to be part of Kingswood by locals. The border between South Gloucestershire and the City of Bristol is situated at the western end of Kingswood's High Street. Although anything beyond this point is technically no longer Kingswood 'proper', locals often consider the shops and residential areas that fringe the road named 'Two Mile Hill' (located within the area of the same name) to be a continuation of Kingswood. Lockleaze
Lockleaze is an area and council ward in the northern suburbs of the city of Bristol, England, north of the city centre, south of Filton, east of Horfield and west of Frenchay. Lockleaze is a residential area of social housing built on the western flank of Purdown on a north–south axis, that was initially separated from Horfield by the main Bristol to South Wales railway line. The suburb was developed immediately after World War II. Although much of the housing was owned by Bristol Corporation, some are now privately owned. The Lockleaze council ward was extended to include older Bristol council housing and the border with Horfield is the thoroughfare, Filton Avenue. Lockleaze School was designed by the city architect A.H. Clarke and built in 1954. It is an early example of 'Method Building' using pre-cast frame with pre-stressed floors and brick panel walling. Hillfields is an area and ward of north-east Bristol. Frome Vale is an wards of the United Kingdom, electoral ward in Bristol, England, lying northeast of the city centre. It is represented by two members on Bristol City Council, which are Louis Martin and Yassin Al Maghrabi of the Labour Party (UK), Labour Party. Eastville, Bristol
Eastville is an inner suburban neighbourhood and an electoral ward in Bristol, England, located around northeast of The Centre. It is roughly centred on Muller Road between its junctions with Stapleton Road and Fishponds Road. Eastville is known for Eastville Park, a large park with a small lake, just to the east of the M32. The lake at Eastville Park was constructed as an unemployment relief scheme following a campaign by Ernest Bevin. The River Frome flows roughly south-southwest through the neighbourhood, and has been closely shadowed by the M32 motorway since its construction in the early 1970s. The motorway crosses the neighbourhood on an elevated flyover over its junction with Muller Road, creating community severance.
