Bozo's Circus
''The Bozo Show'' is a children's television program that aired on WGN-TV in Chicago and nationally on its WGN America, superstation feed (now NewsNation) from 1960 to 2001. It was based on a children's record-book series, ''Bozo the Clown'' by Capitol Records. The series was a locally produced version of the internationally media franchise, franchised ''Bozo the Clown'' format and is the longest-running in the franchise. Recognized as the most popular and successful locally produced children's program in the history of television, it only aired under this title for 14 of its 40+ years: it also aired under the titles ''Bozo'' (1960–1961), ''Bozo's Circus'' (1961–1980), and ''The Bozo Super Sunday Show'' (1994–2001). WGN-TV (channel 9) is a television station in Chicago, Illinois, United States, serving as the local outlet for The CW. It is owned and operated by the network's majority owner, Nexstar Media Group, and is sister station, sister to the company's sole radio property, news/talk/sports radio, sports station WGN (AM), WGN (720 AM). Bozo the Clown, sometimes billed as "Bozo, The World's Most Famous Clown", is a clown character created for children's entertainment, widely popular in the second half of the 20th century. He was introduced in the United States in 1946, and to television in 1949, later appearing in List of television show franchises, franchised television programs of which he was the host, where he was portrayed by numerous local performers. Creation and history The character was created by Alan W. Livingston, and portrayed by Pinto Colvig for a children's storytelling record album and illustrated read-along book set in 1946. Bob Trendler
Robert Trendler (May 11, 1912 – July 18, 2011) was an American bandleader, songwriter, and musical director of the WGN Orchestra from 1956 till 1975. Trendler was known in Chicago as Mr. Bob the bandleader of Bozo's Big Top Band, on ''Bozo's Circus'', a television program for children home from school for lunch. Marshall Brodien (July 10, 1934 – March 8, 2019) was an American professional magician who played Wizzo the Wizard, a wizard clown character which appeared on WGN-TV's '' Bozo's Circus'' and ''The Bozo Show'' from 1968 to 1994. Early life Brodien was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois. At age eight, he took an interest in magic after a magician came to perform at his school. He never graduated high school and began working at age 14, selling and demonstrating magic tricks and novelties at the Magic Center in downtown Chicago. Roy Thomas Brown (8 July 1932 – 22 January 2001) was an American television personality, puppeteer, clown and artist known for playing "Cooky the Cook" (also Cooky the Clown) on Chicago's '' Bozo's Circus''. Early years Roy Brown was born in Tucson, Arizona but had lived in the Chicago area since he was a boy. ''Garfield Goose and Friends'' is a children's television show produced by WGN-TV in Chicago, Illinois, United States, from 1955 to 1976. The show was known as ''Garfield Goose and Friend'' from 1952 to 1955 when it aired on WLS-TV, WBKB and WBBM-TV. It was the longest running puppet show on television until ''Sesame Street'' broke that record. The host of the show was Frazier Thomas, who did all of the talking.
