Boyds is an unincorporated community in exurban Montgomery County, Maryland, United States, located approximately north of Washington, D.C. Its ZIP Code is 20841. According to the United States 2020 Census, the ZIP Code Tabulation Area (ZCTA) for Boyds covers an area of about and has a population of 9,538. Black Hill Regional Park, Little Seneca Lake, and Seneca Creek State Park are located in Boyds. History The community was named for Colonel James Alexander Boyd (1823–1896), a Scottish immigrant who was a construction engineer for the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad. Boyd built a temporary village to house construction workers as the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad built the Metropolitan Branch line after the American Civil War. The railroad line began service in 1873. After the railroad station opened, a mill, stores, and other businesses were established in the area. The Boyds Corner Reservoir is a reservoir in the town of Kent in Putnam County, New York. Located about 50 miles (80 kilometers) north of New York City, it is the northernmost reservoir in the Croton River watershed, but is not part of the New York City water supply system's Croton Watershed. It was formed by impounding the West Branch of the Croton River, and holds of fresh water. History Boyds Corner Reservoir was formed by impounding the Middle Branch of the Croton River in the then farming community of Kent, New York, in Putnam County, roughly 60 miles north of New York City. This was achieved by constructing the Boyds Corner Dam, a high structure completed in 1872 that used concrete in dam construction for the first time since the Ancient Romans. Boyds Bears is a line of manufactured collectable resin and stuffed teddy bears that has relaunched in 2024 after originally being produced from the early 1980s until 2014. Boyds was acquired in 2008 by Enesco, who announced in 2014 that the company had "made the difficult strategic decision to place Boyds into hibernation".
