Boxing At The 2008 Summer Olympics
The boxing program of the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, People's Republic of China, China was held at the Workers Indoor Arena. Medals were awarded in eleven events, with each event corresponding to a recognized weight division of male boxers. The 2008 games were the last Olympic boxing competition to exclude women, as the International Olympic Committee approved the introduction of female boxing events for the 2012 Summer Olympics, 2012 London Olympics. The other is Baseball at the 2008 Summer Olympics, baseball. Like other Olympic combat sports, two bronze medals are awarded; in the case of boxing, both losing semi-finalists receive a bronze medal, with no further play-off. As a result, the quarter-final essentially equates to a bronze medal match, a semi-final to a silver medal match, and the final to a gold medal match. 44 medals are therefore available, 22 of which are bronze medals. Workers Indoor Arena
The Workers' Gymnasium (official name) is an indoor arena located west of the Workers' Stadium in Beijing, China. It was inaugurated in 1961 for the 26th World Table Tennis Championships. It hosted the Boxing at the 2008 Summer Olympics, boxing events at the 2008 Summer Olympics and the Judo events at the 2008 Summer Paralympics. It is one of 11 Beijing-based venues to be renovated and upgraded for the Olympics. The arena has a seating capacity of 13,000. Vincenzo Picardi (born October 20, 1983, in Casoria) is an Italian professional boxer best known for winning bronze medals in the flyweight division at both the 2007 World Amateur Boxing Championships in Chicago and at the 2008 Olympics. He failed to qualify for the 2004 Summer Olympics, finishing in third place at the 3rd AIBA European 2004 Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Gothenburg, Sweden. Yordenis Ugás
Yordenis Ugás Hernández (born 14 July 1986) is a Cuban professional boxer. He held the WBA (Super) welterweight title from 2021 to April 2022, having previously held the WBA (Regular) title from 2020 until being elevated to Super champion. As an amateur, Ugás won a gold medal at the 2005 World Championships and bronze at the 2008 Olympics, both in the lightweight division. Hrachik Javakhyan
Hrachik Javakhyan (, born on July 6, 1984, in Vanadzor, Armenian SSR) is an Armenian boxer best known to win gold at the 2010 European Amateur Boxing Championships and bronze at the 2008 Summer Olympics. Daouda Sow (boxer)
Daouda Sow (born 19 January 1983 in Roubaix) is an amateur boxer from France. He competed at the 2008 Summer Olympics in the lightweight division. Sow signed with the AIBA professional league, called AIBA Pro Boxing (APB), which launched in autumn of 2013. Aleksei Tishchenko
Aleksei Viktorovich Tishchenko (; born 29 May 1984) is a former Russian Olympic boxer best known for dominating the lower weight classes and winning numerous titles. He was regarded as "one of the best pound for pound Olympic boxers in the world". He was born in Omsk, Soviet Union. Career Tishchenko won the Featherweight Gold medal at the 2004 Summer Olympics. Khédafi Djelkhir, or sometimes Khesafi Djelkhir, (born 26 October 1983) is a French featherweight amateur boxer of Algerian origin.
