Boswell Williams
Boswell Bennie Williams (May 16, 1926 – July 20, 2014) was a Saint Lucian politician who represented the district of Vieux Fort in the legislature from 1974 to 1979. He was appointed by Queen Elizabeth II of Saint Lucia as governor-general on June 19, 1980, replacing Sir Allen Montgomery Lewis, father of the former prime minister Vaughan Lewis. He was initially acting governor general, becoming governor general in December 1981. Williams had to confront the most serious constitutional crisis in the history of Saint Lucia soon after the rejection of Prime Minister Allan Louisy's budget proposal. He was removed from office by the Queen on the advice of Louisy with effect from December 12, 1982. Williams died at his home in Sans Soucis on July 20, 2014 at the age of 88. The Order of Saint Lucia is an order of chivalry established in 1986 by Elizabeth II. The Order comprises seven classes. History Of Saint Lucia
Saint Lucia was inhabited by the Arawak and Kalinago Caribs before European contact in the early 16th century. It was colonized by the British and French in the 17th century and was the subject of several possession changes until 1814, when it was ceded to the British by France for the final time. In 1958, St. Lucia joined the short-lived semi-autonomous West Indies Federation. Saint Lucia was an associated state of the United Kingdom from 1967 to 1979 and then gained full independence on February 22, 1979. Pre-colonial period Saint Lucia was first inhabited sometime between 1000 and 500 BC by the Ciboney people, but there is not a lot of evidence of their presence on the island. The first proven inhabitants were the peaceful Arawaks, believed to have come from northern South America around 200-400 AD, as there are numerous archaeological sites on the island where specimens of the Arawaks' well-developed pottery have been found. Allan Louisy
Sir Allan Fitzgerald Laurent Louisy (5 September 1916 – 2 March 2011) was the second prime minister of independent St Lucia, following Sir John Compton in office. He was born in Laborie on 5 September 1916 and served as a judge before being elected to parliament in 1974. In the 1979 general elections, Louisy became Prime Minister following the Saint Lucia Labour Party (SLP) victory. He was succeeded as Prime Minister by Winston Cenac. After retiring from politics, Sir Allan Louisy continued working as a consultant and as a lawyer. He was also actively involved in the trade union movement. In his later years, he retired to his home in Saphyr Estate, and continued to spend his time volunteering in Laborie. He was knighted on 31 March 2005, recognizing all his accomplishments and benevolence during his lifetime. He died on 2 March 2011 at home, surrounded by family. Vaughan Lewis
Sir Vaughan Allen Lewis, KCSL CBE (born 17 May 1940), is a Saint Lucian politician and a former member of the United Workers' Party (UWP). He served for a brief period as the fifth Prime Minister of Saint Lucia following the resignation of John Compton. Lewis, a former director of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States, assumed the office of Prime Minister on 2 April 1996. He also served as Minister of Finance, Planning and Development, and Minister of External Affairs. In elections that followed on 23 May 1997, Lewis and the UWP suffered a huge setback, losing all but one of their seats in Parliament, forcing him to resign in favor of the leader of the Saint Lucia Labour Party, Dr Kenny Anthony. Compton defeated Lewis for the UWP leadership in a party conference in Soufrière on 13 March 2005. Compton received 260 votes against 135 for Lewis.
