''Born to Be Blue'' is a 2015 internationally co-produced drama film directed, produced and written by Robert Budreau. The film stars Ethan Hawke and Carmen Ejogo. It was shown in the Special Presentations section of the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival. The film is about American jazz musician Chet Baker, portrayed by Hawke. Plot The film is described as "semi-factual, semi-fictional". ''Varietys reviewer, Andrew Barker, noted that the film is "about a character who happens to share a name and a significant number of biographical similarities with Chet Baker, taking the legendary West Coast jazz musician's life as though it were merely a chord chart from which to launch an improvised set of new melodies". Pacific Jazz Records was a Los Angeles–based record company and label best known for cool jazz or West coast jazz. It was founded in 1952 by producer Richard Bock (1927–1988) and drummer Roy Harte (1924–2003). Harte, in 1954, also co-founded Nocturne Records with jazz bassist Harry Babasin (1921–1988). Some of the musicians who recorded for Pacific Jazz included Chet Baker, Paul Desmond, Gerry Mulligan, Joe Pass, Gerald Wilson, the Jazz Crusaders, Don Ellis, Clare Fischer, Jim Hall, Groove Holmes, Les McCann, Wes Montgomery, and Art Pepper. Eugene Clark (born December 3, 1951) is an American-Canadian character actor and former football player. Early life Clark was born in Tampa, Florida. He attended Riverside Polytechnic High School. Career Football He was an actor four years before he began playing college football and he was an all-conference offensive guard at UCLA. Named to the first All-Star teams for both the Pacific-8 and the West Coast Athletic Conference, Clark also received All Star All American Honorable Mention Laurels, played in the Hula Bowl and was selected by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the ninth round of the 1975 NFL draft. John Birks "Dizzy" Gillespie ( ; October 21, 1917 – January 6, 1993) was an American jazz trumpeter, bandleader, composer, educator and singer.
