Bobsleigh At The 2018 Winter Olympics
Bobsleigh at the Winter Olympics, Bobsleigh at the 2018 Winter Olympics was held at the Alpensia Sliding Centre near Pyeongchang, South Korea. The events were scheduled to take place between 18 and 25 February 2018. A total of three bobsleigh events were held. Qualification A maximum of 170 quota spots were available to athletes to compete at the games (130 men and 40 women). The qualification was based on the world rankings of 18 January 2018. Alpensia Sliding Centre
The Olympic Sliding Centre () is a bobsleigh, luge, and skeleton (sport), skeleton track that is located in Daegwallyeong-myeon, Daegwallyeong, Pyeongchang County, Pyeongchang, South Korea. The centre is located between the Alpensia and Yongpyong Resort. The venue is one of only two operating sliding facilities in Asia, along with the Spiral (bobsleigh, luge, and skeleton), Spiral in Japan. It was renamed from Alpensia Sliding Centre to Olympic Sliding Centre in June 2017. Francesco Friedrich
Francesco Friedrich (born 2 May 1990) is a German bobsledder who has been active since 2006. At the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea, he and his brakeman Thorsten Margis tied with Canada's Justin Kripps and Alexander Kopacz for the gold medal in the two-man competition. Friedrich also won gold outright in the four-man event alongside Margis, Candy Bauer and Martin Grothkopp, making Friedrich the fifth German pilot to win two-man and four-man golds at the same Games, after Andreas Ostler in 1952, Meinhard Nehmer in 1976, Wolfgang Hoppe in 1984 and André Lange in 2006. Lisa Buckwitz
Lisa-Marie Buckwitz (born 2 December 1994) is a German bobsledder. She won a gold medal in the two-woman event at the 2018 Winter Olympics, and also competed at the 2022 Winter Olympics. Career Buckwitz started off as a heptathlete. Buckwitz took up bobsleigh in 2013, and trains at the club. She won two junior championships. In 2015, Buckwitz and Cathleen Martini won the two-woman Bobsleigh World Cup event in Königssee. In 2016, Buckwitz and Stephanie Schneider won a bronze medal in the two-woman at the Bobsleigh European Championship, and came fourth in the two-woman event at the IBSF World Championships in Igls, Austria. Mariama Jamanka (born 23 August 1990) is a journalist and retired German bobsledder who won Gold in the two-woman event with Lisa Buckwitz at the 2018 Winter Olympics. Career A former discus and hammer thrower of Berlin, Jamanka became a bobsledder in 2013. She entered the Bobsleigh World Cup during the 2015–16 season. Kim Dong-hyun (; born 12 November 1987) is a South Korean bobsledder who has competed since 2008. At the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, he finished 19th in the four-man event. Seo Young-woo (, born 27 October 1991) is a South Korean bobsledder who competes as the brakeman for the two-man bobsled piloted by Won Yun-jong as well as a push crewman for the four-man bobsled also piloted by Won Yun-jong. Career Seo previously competed in track & field as a high school athlete. As a freshman at Sungkyul University, he was selected for the South Korean national bobsleigh team in early 2010 and made his first international appearance at the North American Cup in Park City in November 2010. Kevin Kuske (born 4 January 1979) is a former German bobsledder who competed from 1999 to 2018. Competing in five Winter Olympics, he is the most successful Olympic athlete in bobsledding, winning four gold medals and two silver medals. Career Prior to his bobsleigh career, Kuske was a sprinter athlete, and won a bronze medal in 4 x 100 m at the 1998 World Junior Championships in Athletics.
