Robert MacKay Smith
Robert Mackay Smith FRSE (1802–1888) was a Scottish businessman, meteorologist and philanthropist. Glasgow University's Mackay Smith Prizes were founded by him in 1882. He was the Chairman of the Edinburgh Chamber of Commerce and a Director of the Commercial Bank of Scotland. Life He was born in Glasgow on 24 May 1802 the son of Peter Smith, a flax merchant living at 76 Stirling Street and his wife, Euphemia MacKay. He attended Glasgow University studying Sciences and graduated MA in 1815, aged only thirteen. He moved to Leith in 1834 to work as a commission agent and lived and worked there for most of his life. Smith studied at Pittsburg State University (Kansas), at the Juilliard School of Music in New York City with Daniel Ferro, and in Europe. Robert Kimmel Smith (July 31, 1930 – April 18, 2020) was an American novelist and children's author. Smith was born in Brooklyn, New York and first learned to read from his mother Sally. Smith was inspired to become a writer at age eight, when he became bedbound for three months while suffering rheumatic fever and amused himself by reading books, then inventing new characters and endings for the stories. He attended Brooklyn College in 1947 but dropped out after a year when he proved unable to do chemistry or calculus. He served in the U.S. Army from 1951 to 1953, spending time stationed overseas in Germany. When he returned to America, he married his wife, Claire Medney, in 1954. Smith & Mighty are an English trip hop group from Bristol, England, consisting of Rob Smith, Ray Mighty and Peter D Rose. They pioneered the Bristol sound producing Massive Attack's "Any Love". The Bristol sound being a precursor to trip hop. As well as producing for others, they produced their own work, and various solo projects and collaborations. Biography In the late 1980s, they produced their first releases; were breakbeat covers of " Anyone Who Had a Heart" and " Walk On By". Both songs entered the UK Singles Chart. They produced Massive Attack's first single, "Any Love" released in 1988. In 1989, they produced " Wishing on a Star" for Fresh 4, a group consisting of Paul Southey (Suv), Krust, Judge and Flynn Thompson. The track was an early example of the Bristol sound; it exposed more people to the style charting in the UK at number 10. Smith and Mighty left London in 1994.
