The bloodhound is a large scent hound, originally bred for hunting deer, wild boar, rabbits, and since the Middle Ages, for tracking people. Believed to be descended from hounds once kept at the Abbey of Saint-Hubert, Belgium, in French it is called . Its extraordinarily keen sense of smell is combined with a strong and tenacious tracking instinct, producing the ideal scent hound. Agouti-signaling protein is a protein that in humans is encoded by the ASIP gene. It is responsible for the distribution of melanin pigment in mammals. The Artois Hound or Chien D'Artois is a medium-sized breed of dog. A scent hound, the Artois was breed in northern France as a pack hunter. It is a rare breed today, but was popular in France before the 20th century. The breed was heavily crossbred and had to be reconstructed in the 1970s to more closely resemble the historical breed. The Gascon Saintongeois is a breed of dog of the scenthound type, recognised in two varieties, ''Grand'' (large) and ''Petit'' (smaller than the Grand, but ''not'' a small dog). Norman Hound
The Norman Hound is a now extinct breed of scent hound from France. Overview Little is known about the origins of the Norman Hound, it has been said it was developed from St. Hubert Hounds and local hounds from Normandy. The breed was introduced into England by the Normans in the 11th century after their conquest of the country, and it believed both the Bloodhound and Talbot descended from it. The Norman Hound was said to have excellent scenting abilities, great stamina and a magnificent voice, but was extremely slow; a pack usually took between six and eight hours to hunt a stag. The breed was very large, standing between . They came in a broad range of colours, from pure white, to tri-colour (black, tan and white), to pure black. Fox hunting is an activity involving the tracking, chase and, if caught, the killing of a fox, normally a red fox, by trained foxhounds or other scent hounds. Gastric dilatation volvulus (GDV), also known as gastric dilation, twisted stomach, or gastric torsion, is a medical condition that affects dogs and rarely cats and guinea pigs, in which the stomach becomes overstretched and rotated by excessive gas content. The condition also involves compression of the Thoracic diaphragm, diaphragm and caudal vena cavae. The word bloat is often used as a general term to mean Abdominal distension, gas distension without stomach torsion (a normal change after eating), or to refer to GDV.
