Moth
Moths are a paraphyletic group of insects that includes all members of the order Lepidoptera that are not butterflies, with moths making up the vast majority of the order. There are thought to be approximately 160,000 species of moth, many of which have yet to be described. Most species of moth are nocturnal, but there are also crepuscular and diurnal species. Differences between butterflies and moths While the butterflies form a monophyletic group, the moths, comprising the rest of the Lepidoptera, do not. Blastobasidae
The Blastobasidae are a family of moths in the superfamily Gelechioidea. Its species can be found almost anywhere in the world, though in some places they are not native but introduced by humans. In some arrangements, these moths are included in the case-bearer family (Coleophoridae) as subfamily Blastobasinae. The Symmocidae are sometimes included in the Blastobasidae (particularly if both are included in Coleophoridae) as subfamily or tribe. In addition, the group around ''Holcocera'' is often separated as subfamily Holcocerinae (or tribe Holcocerini) from the ''Blastobasis'' lineage (which correspondingly become a subfamily, or a tribe Blastobasini). While this seems far more reasonable than some of the more extreme arrangements sometimes seen in Gelechioidea taxonomy and systematics, the relationships among Blastobasidae genera are not yet sufficiently studied to allow a well-supported subdivision of this family. John David Bradley
John David Bradley (24 January 1920 – 4 January 2004) was a British lepidopterist. He is best known for his works with Arthur Smith and Gerry Tremewan in ''British Tortricoid Moths''. He also appears in the ''Acknowledgements'' section of almost every work on microlepidoptera in recent decades. Early life Bradley was born in Wimbledon, London on 24 January 1920, and began his interest in insects during his childhood. He left school at 16 to become a lab assistant in bacteriology at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. In 1938, Bradley joined the British Museum as a Preparator, but the Second World War interrupted. He then spent a few years in the armed forces in Austria, Italy, and North Africa. Career After the war, Bradley returned to the Museum and began work on the curation of Meyrick's collection. He joined the Commonwealth Institute of Entomology in 1964. Guadalcanal
Guadalcanal (; indigenous name: ''Isatabu'') is the principal island in Guadalcanal Province of Solomon Islands, located in the south-western Pacific, northeast of Australia. It is the largest island in the Solomon Islands by area, and the second by population (after Malaita). The island is mainly covered in dense tropical rainforest and has a mountainous hinterland. Guadalcanal's first charting by westerners was under the Spanish expedition of Álvaro de Mendaña in 1568. The name comes from the village of Guadalcanal, in the province of Seville, in Andalusia, Spain, birthplace of Pedro de Ortega Valencia, a member of Mendaña's expedition. During 1942–43, it was the scene of the Guadalcanal Campaign and saw bitter fighting between Japanese and US troops. The Americans were ultimately victorious. Blastobasis
''Blastobasis'' is the type genus of the gelechioid moth family Blastobasidae; in some arrangements these are placed in the case-bearer family (Coleophoridae) as a subfamily. Within the Blastobasidae, the subfamily Blastobasinae (or tribe Blastobasini, if united with the concealer moths) has been established to distinguish the ''Blastobasis'' lineage from the group around ''Holcocera'', but the delimitation is not yet well-resolved. The monophyly of this genus – the largest of its family, containing at present about half the described Blastobasidae species – is seriously in doubt. Many presumed relatives have been separated in small or even monotypic genera, which may actually represent specialized lineages within the ''Blastobasis'' assemblage. On the other hand, some formerly-independent genera are usually included in ''Blastobasis'' at the moment.
