Bits Of Life
''Bits of Life'' is a 1921 American film produced and directed by Marshall Neilan. The cast included Lon Chaney and Noah Beery, Sr. For her performance in this film, Anna May Wong received her first screen credit. It is notable as an early anthology film, comprising four short stories: “The Bad Samaritan” by Thomas McMorrow, “The Man Who Heard Everything” by Walter Trumbull, “Hop” by Hugh Wiley, and “The Intrigue” by Marshall Neilan. The four stories were unrelated, shot with different casts, by different directors, and at different times. The poster called the format "The Magazine Idea brought to the screen". (Chaney only appeared in the "Hop" episode.) The film's tagline was "The Social World! The Underworld! and San Francisco's Chinatown!". Marshall Neilan
Marshall Ambrose "Mickey" Neilan (April 11, 1891 – October 27, 1958; also credited Marshall Neilon) was an American actor, director, producer, and screenwriter, whose work in films began in the early Silent film, silent era. Early life Born in San Bernardino, California, Neilan was known by most as "Mickey." Following the death of his father, the eleven-year-old Mickey Neilan had to give up on school to work at whatever he could find in order to help support his mother. As a teenager, he began acting in bit parts in theatre, live theatre, and in 1910 he got a job as chauffeur, driving Biograph Studios executives around Los Angeles to determine the suitability of the West Coast of the United States, West Coast as a place for a permanent studio. Nora Sampson (August 8, 1895 – November 24, 1970), known professionally as Teddy Sampson, was an American stage and silent film actress who appeared in at least forty-one motion pictures between 1914 and 1923. Biography Nora Sampson was born in New York City, the sixth of seven children raised by Revere and Mary Sampson. Her father, who worked for a New York cab company, was a great-great grandson of the American patriot Paul Revere. Sampson's parents married in 1885, around five years after her mother had emigrated from Ireland. Lost Film
A lost film is a feature film, feature or short film in which the original negative or copies are not known to exist in any studio archive, private collection, or public archive. Films can be wholly or partially lost for a number of reasons. Early films were not thought to have value beyond their theatrical run, so many were discarded afterward. Nitrate film used in early pictures was highly flammable and susceptible to degradation. The Library of Congress began acquiring copies of American films in 1909, but not all were kept. Due to improvements in film technology and recordkeeping, few films produced in the 1950s or beyond have been lost. James F. Neill (September 29, 1860 – March 16, 1931) was an American stage actor and film actor of the silent era. He appeared in more than 110 films between 1913 and 1930. Harriet Hammond
Harriet Hammond (October 20, 1899 – September 23, 1991) was an American actress of the silent film, silent era. She appeared in more than 40 films between 1918 and 1930. Hammond, who was appearing in prominent roles in the Mack Sennett comedy features, was born in Kansas but had lived in Los Angeles, since her early childhood and was a graduate of Los Angeles High Schools. Hammond studied piano and languages at Baylor and planned to become a concert pianist. The strain of six hours a day practice, however, proved too severe, and her health broke down. Starting as one of the Sennett Bathing Beauties she simultaneously developed great power as a comedian, and the Sennett figure. Miss Hammond appeared in "Gee Whiz!" and "By Golly." Tammany Young (September 9, 1886 – April 26, 1936) was an American stage and film actor. Early life Born in New York City, Young appeared on Broadway in '' The Front Page'' (1928) by Ben Hecht and '' The New Yorkers'' (1930) by Herbert Fields and Cole Porter. He was considered a "good luck actor" by Broadway producers. He was often cast in bit parts by the likes of The Shuberts, Jed Harris and David Belasco to bring luck to their productions.
