Biswajit Daimary
Biswajit Daimary (born 4 February 1971) is an Indian politician from Bharatiya Janata Party. He is current speaker of Assam Legislative Assembly. He represented Assam in Rajya Sabha as a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party and as a member of the Bodoland People's Front. He was first elected as Member of Assam Legislative Assembly from 2001 to 2006 and later elected as Member of Parliament to Rajya Sabha from 2008 to 2014. He was elected for second term from 2014 to 2020 as a member of Bodoland People's Front and from 2021 as a member of the BJP. In November 2020, Daimary left BPF to join Bharatiya Janata Party before Bodoland Territorial Council elections. On 21 November 2020, Daimary resigned from the Rajya Sabha. The Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR), informally Bodoland, is an autonomous region and a proposed state in Assam, Northeast India. It is made up of five districts on the north bank of the Brahmaputra river below the foothills of Bhutan and Arunachal Pradesh. It is administered by an elected body known as the Bodoland Territorial Council which came into existence under the terms of a peace agreement signed in February 2003 and its autonomy was further extended by an agreement signed in January 2020. The Rajya Sabha (meaning the "Council of States") is the upper house of the Parliament of India. Assam elects 7 seats since 1956 (one more than 1952-1956). Members are indirectly elected by state legislators (elected politicians) of Assam. The number of the seven seats allocated to each party is proportional to the legislators' number at the time of nomination. Each party in Assam thus meeting a minimum quota of of the local seats nominates a member; if a party has to ths of the local seats those legislators select two members (and so forth). The Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) is an autonomous council for the Bodoland Territorial Region established under 6th Schedule of The Constitution of India according to the Memorandum of Settlement between Bodoland Liberation Tiger Force (BLTF) and Government of India and Government of Assam.
