Birmingham And Warwick Junction Canal
The Birmingham and Warwick Junction Canal is a short canal connecting the Warwick and Birmingham Canal at Bordesley Junction in Birmingham () to the Birmingham and Fazeley Canal at Salford Junction near Gravelly Hill Interchange (). It was authorised in 1840 to relieve pressure on this connection to the Grand Junction Canal leading to London and opened in 1844. It is long and had six locks. History During the 1830s, the Birmingham Canal Navigations (BCN) had been upgraded to improve the flow of traffic. James Brindley's main line, now known as the BCN Old Main Line, which had followed the contours, had been reduced in length from to by Thomas Telford, with the new route known as the BCN New Main Line. Salford Junction
Salford Junction () is the Junction (canal), canal junction of the Grand Union Canal, Grand Union and Tame Valley Canals with the Birmingham and Fazeley Canal. It is in the north of the administrative city of Birmingham, England and historically marked a tripoint between two divisions of Aston, West Midlands, Aston to the south and Erdington to the north. It is directly east of most of the Gravelly Hill Interchange (Spaghetti Junction). Fellows Morton & Clayton
Fellows Morton & Clayton Ltd was, for much of the early 20th century, the largest and best-known canal transportation company in England. The company was in existence from 1889 to 1947. Origins The company started in 1837 when James Fellows, an agent for a canal carrier, decided to start his own company. James was 32 and based in West Bromwich. His first boat was called "Providence". In January 1839 he was allowed toll credit on the Warwick and Napton Canal as his boats were working down to London so frequently. He expanded rapidly and moved his operation to Toll End in Tipton in 1841. His business was as a "Railway & Canal Carrier" even though his rail activities were minor. James died in 1854 aged 49, and his widow Eliza carried on the business until their son Joshua was old enough to be an official partner. Boulton & Watt was an early British engineering and manufacturing firm in the business of designing and making marine and stationary steam engines. Founded in the English West Midlands around Birmingham in 1775 as a partnership between the English manufacturer Matthew Boulton and the Scottish engineer James Watt, the firm had a major role in the Industrial Revolution and grew to be a major producer of steam engines in the 19th century. The River Rea (pronounced "ray") is a small river which passes through Birmingham, England. It is the river on which Birmingham was founded by the Beorma tribe in the 7th century. Name The name of the Rea derives from a root found in many Indo-European languages and means "to run" or "to flow".
