Bird Reserve
A bird reserve (also called ornithological reserve) is a wildlife refuge designed to protect bird species. Like other wildlife refuges, the main goal of a reserve is to prevent species from becoming endangered or extinct. Typically, bird species in a reserve are protected from hunting and habitat destruction. Because of the protection they provide from such threats, bird reserves also serve as excellent locations for bird watching. Normally, wildlife refuges are under the care of non-profit organizations and governmental institutions. Getterön
Getterön is a peninsula in Varberg Municipality, Halland County, Sweden, immediately northwest of the municipal seat Varberg. Getterön was an island until 1936, when the sound (geography), sound between Getterön and the mainland was filled out and a road was built. Etymology The name Getterön is very old. It is derived from the Viking Age or even earlier. The spelling has varied, for example ''Gederöen'' or ''Gäderöen'' in 1645, ''Geterholmen'' in 1691, ''Getter ön'' in 1733, ''Geterön'' 1734 and ''Gietterön'' in 1752. The current spelling ''Getterön'' was not widely recognized until the 1900s, but appears in documents as early as in the 18th century and used in the public land registration, land registry in 1825. The name's meaning is unclear. Probably there is an etymological link with the nearby ''Getakärr'', a Middle Ages, medieval city that was a predecessor of Varberg. Öland
Öland (, ; ; sometimes written ''Oland'' internationally) is the second-largest Swedish island and the smallest of the traditional provinces of Sweden. Öland has an area of and is located in the Baltic Sea just off the coast of Småland. The island has over 26,000 inhabitants. It is separated from the mainland by the Kalmar Strait and connected to it by the Öland Bridge, which opened on 30 September 1972. The county seat Kalmar is on the mainland at the other end of the bridge and is an important commercial centre related to the Öland economy. Tåkern
Lake Tåkern () is a lake in Östergötland County, Sweden. It is considered one of northern Europe's foremost bird lakes. It is long and wide, with an average depth only . The lake lies around west of Mjölby, bordering in the west to Omberg. The whole lake, with the surrounding beaches, has been a nature reserve since 1975. From April to the end of July, it is not open to the public, except for visiting areas and walking routes. The lake's history as a birdlake is related to the lake's water level lowering between 1842 and 1844. A number of bird species benefited from this. A change of the water level in the 1960s was made to prevent large differences in the water level. Tåkern is in Ramsar Convention, an international convention for protection of valuable wetlands. Water Bird
A water bird, alternatively waterbird or aquatic bird, is a bird that lives on or around water. In some definitions, the term ''water bird'' is especially applied to birds in freshwater ecosystems, although others make no distinction from seabirds that inhabit marine environments. Some water birds (e.g. wading birds) are more terrestrial while others (e.g. waterfowls) are more aquatic, and their adaptations will vary depending on their environment. The Ramsar Convention on Wetlands of International Importance Especially as Waterfowl Habitat is an international treaty for the conservation and sustainable use of Ramsar site, Ramsar sites (wetlands).
