Bill Johnson (New Zealand Actor)
William Johnson (1924 – 23 September 2016) was an actor from New Zealand who is best known to American audiences as portraying "Mr. Wilberforce" in the 1981 TV series ''Under the Mountain''. Johnson would also appear in a cameo as "Mr. Carpenter" in the 2009 ''Under the Mountain'' film remake. In his later career he co-starred in the film '' The Water Horse: Legend of the Deep'' and appeared in a brief supporting role in the 2005 version of ''King Kong King Kong is a fictional giant monster resembling a gorilla, who has appeared in various media since 1933. He has been dubbed The Eighth Wonder of the World, a phrase commonly used within the franchise. His first appearance was in the novelizat ...''. Johnson was born in Hebden Bridge, Great Britain, in 1924. He began his career in the 1960s making films for the company Kiwi Screens. ''Under the Mountain'' is an eight-part television series based on the 1979 novel of the same name written by Maurice Gee, first transmitted in 1981 and produced by Television New Zealand. Many of the minor roles in this series were played by people who were at the time well known performers in New Zealand. Series overview Plot The show focuses on twins Rachel and Theo Matheson. While on school summer holidays in Auckland, they are contacted by a man named Mr. Jones, who had met them briefly eight years earlier. This time, Mr. Jones reveals his true identity and mission. He is an alien—a member of the mysterious race called The People Who Understand and was sent from another world in a battle against another race of aliens. These latter creatures were a family of slimy, slug-like beasts who could take on human form. ''Under the Mountain'' is a 2009 New Zealand film directed by Jonathan King starring Sam Neill, Oliver Driver, Sophie McBride, and Tom Cameron. It is based on the 1979 novel of the same name by New Zealand author Maurice Gee. Plot Teenage twins Rachel and Theo travel to Auckland to stay with relatives following the sudden death of their mother. Where there was once a psychic bond between them, now there is a rift as Theo, particularly, refuses to confront his grief. Rachel reaches out to him, but is rebuffed. Staying with their Aunt Kay and Uncle Cliff on Lake Pupuke, the twins are fascinated by the volcanic lake and the smell that seems to come from creepy old Wilberforce house around the shore.
