Bill James
George William James (born October 5, 1949) is an American baseball writer, historian, and statistician whose work has been widely influential. Since 1977, James has written more than two dozen books about baseball history and statistics. His approach, which he named sabermetrics after the Society for American Baseball Research (SABR), scientifically analyzes and studies baseball, often through the use of statistical data, in an attempt to determine why teams win and lose. In 2006, ''Time (magazine), Time'' named him in the Time 100, ''Time'' 100 as one of the most influential people in the world. In 2003, James was hired as senior advisor on Baseball Operations for the Boston Red Sox and worked for the team for 17 years during which they won four World Series championships. William Henry "Big Bill" James (January 20, 1887 – May 25, 1942) was a professional baseball pitcher. He played all or part of eight seasons in Major League Baseball between 1911 and 1919. Primarily used as a starting pitcher, he played for the Cleveland Naps (1911–1912), St. Louis Browns (1914–1915), Detroit Tigers (1915–1919), Boston Red Sox (1919) and Chicago White Sox (1919). James was a switch hitter and threw right-handed. He was born in Detroit, Michigan. In an eight-season career, Big Bill posted a 65–71 record with 408 strikeouts and a 3.20 ERA in 1179.2 innings pitched. In 1917, Chick Gandil and his teammate, Swede Risberg, allegedly collected $45 from each member of the White Sox and paid off the Detroit Tigers in two crucial doubleheaders late in the season. William Lawrence "Seattle Bill" James (March 12, 1892 – March 10, 1971) was an American Major League Baseball pitcher. He was given a nickname to differentiate him from his contemporary, "Big" Bill James. The Braves purchased James in from the Seattle Giants of the Northwestern League. In 1914, James was an integral member of the "Miracle Braves" team that went from last place to first place in two months, becoming the first team to win a pennant after being in last place on the Fourth of July. William Nelson James (November 14, 1897 – September 15, 1969) was an American college football player and coach. He served as the head football coach at Trinity University in San Antonio from 1949 to 1951, compiling a record of 15–14–3. Early life and college playing career James was born on November 14, 1897, in Watauga, Texas. After graduating from North Side High School in Fort Worth, Texas, he went to Centre College with former coach Robert L. Myers joining up with the likes of high school teammates Matty Bell, Bob Mathias, and Sully Montgomery. Bo McMillin and Red Weaver played for North Side as well, but did not have enough credits to yet go to college. They went to Somerset High in Kentucky, where they met up with Red Roberts and were recruited by boosters to Centre. Bill James (15 August 1929 – 17 June 2023) is a pseudonym of Allan James Tucker, a Welsh novelist. He also wrote under his own name and the pseudonyms ''David Craig'' and ''Judith Jones''. The bulk of his output under the Bill James pseudonym is the ''Harpur and Iles'' series.
