Biliran Watchtower
The Biliran Watchtower, also known as Nasunugan Watchtower, is a watchtower ruin located in Biliran, Philippines. Built in 1765 under the initiative of Filipino priest Gaspar Ignacio de Guevara, the watchtower was used to watch Biliran's coast for Muslim raids. In 1774, the raiders attacked and burned the local settlement, including the watchtower. In 2000, the watchtower was reconstructed using its original materials. Watchtower
A watchtower or guardtower (also spelt watch tower, guard tower) is a type of military/paramilitary or policiary tower used for guarding an area. Sometimes fortified, and armed with heavy weaponry, especially historically, the structures are built in areas of established control. These include military bases, cities occupied by military forces, prisons and more. A common equipment is searchlights. It differs from a regular tower in that its primary use is military/policiary and from a turret in that it is usually a freestanding structure. Its main purpose is to provide a high, safe place from which a sentinel or guard may observe the surrounding area. Biliran, officially the Province of Biliran (Waray language, Waray-Waray: ''Probinsya han Biliran''; ; ), is an island province in the Philippines located in the Eastern Visayas Regions of the Philippines, region (Region VIII). Gaspar Ignacio De Guevara
Gaspar Ignacio de Guevara was a Filipino Catholic priest from Samar who was appointed as the curate of Juan Nepomuceno Church in Biliran in 1765. He was known for breaking away from the institutional Roman Catholic church and leading the Biliran religious revolt from 1765 until his death in 1774. Early life Ignacio was born in Paranas, Samar. His surname, Ignacio, may have been given by the Jesuits as a tribute to their founder, Ignatius of Loyola. It is likely that the Jesuits recommended him for priesthood studies in Cebu. Ignacio was appointed as the curate of Juan Nepomuceno Church in Biliran in 1765.
