Bili Ape
The Bili apes, or Bondo mystery apes, were names given in 2003 in sensational reports in the popular media to a purportedly new species of highly aggressive, giant ape supposedly inhabiting the Bili Forest, wetlands and savannah around of the village of Bili in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. "The apes nest on the ground like gorillas, but they have a diet and features characteristic of chimpanzees", according to a 2003 ''National Geographic'' article. Scientists soon determined they were common chimpanzees, and part of a larger contiguous population stretching throughout that part of northern Congo. Genetic testing with Mitochondrial DNA, non-nuclear DNA in 2003 immediately indicated that it was in fact part of the already described eastern chimpanzee (''Pan troglodytes schweinfurthii''), a subspecies of the common chimpanzee. History Skulls of gorillas were first collected near the town of Bili in 1908. These were sent to the colonial power of Belgium; in 1927, a new sub ...

Bili Forest
Bili (coordinates 4°9'N 25°10'E), which is about 200 km east of Bondo and 250 km north of Buta, is a city in the Bas-Uélé District in the northern Democratic Republic of the Congo in Central Africa. It lies along the Bili river, a tributary of the Ubangi river. It lies 50 km south of the Mbomou river, which forms the border with the Central African Republic. It is situated to the north of the Uélé river. The town has existed since at least 1908. It sits on land covered in marshlands, swamps and savannah, with patches of forest, while to the south of the Uélé lies dense unbroken rainforest. The local populace of the greater area are Azande. In 2005, a ''Time'' reporter found the region was highly undeveloped due to war and neglect. Bicycles were the main mode of transport at the time. Faris, Stephan (January 17, 2005)"Lost apes of the Congo: A ''Time'' Reporter Travels Deep into the African Jungle in Search of a Mysterious Chimp Called the Lion Killer" '' ...

Bili Light
A bili light is a light therapy tool to treat newborn jaundice ( hyperbilirubinemia). High levels of bilirubin can cause brain damage (kernicterus), leading to cerebral palsy, auditory neuropathy, gaze abnormalities and dental enamel hypoplasia. The therapy uses a blue light (420–470 nm) that converts bilirubin into an (E,Z)-isomer that can be excreted in the urine and feces. Soft goggles are put on the child to reduce eye damage from the high intensity light. The baby is kept naked or only wearing a diaper, and is turned over frequently to expose more of the skin. Conventional bili lights shine from above the baby. A biliblanket consists of a fiber-optic blanket designed to transfer the light from a lamp unit all around the baby's body, and is more commonly used at home. Neonatal jaundice Jaundice (Hyperbilirubinemia) is common in newborn babies and presents itself as yellow discoloration of the skin and whites of the eyes (sclera). About 50 percent of term and 80 ...

Guan (instrument)
The ''guan'' () is a Chinese double reed wind instrument. The northern Chinese version is called ''guanzi'' ( 管子) or ''bili'' (traditional: 篳篥; simplified: 筚篥) and the Cantonese version is called ''houguan'' ( 喉管). It is classified as a bamboo instrument in the Ba Yin (ancient Chinese instrument classification) system. Unlike other instruments in the double-reed family of woodwinds which mostly have conical bores, such as the Chinese ''suona'' or the Western oboe, the ''guan'' has a cylindrical bore, giving its distinctive mellow, yet piercing buzz-like timbre. History The earliest use of the word ''guan'' can be traced back to Zhou dynasty records, where it refers to end-blown bamboo flutes such as the '' xiao'' or '' paixiao''. The earliest double-reed instrument appears in the late Zhou dynasty and is referred as ''hújiā'' ( zh, c=, l=reed pipe of Hu people, labels=no) because it had been introduced from the northwestern region of China. During th ...

Bilirubin
Bilirubin (BR) (adopted from German, originally bili—bile—plus ruber—red—from Latin) is a red-orange compound that occurs in the normcomponent of the straw-yellow color in urine. Another breakdown product, stercobilin, causes the brown color of feces. Although bilirubin is usually found in animals rather than plants, at least one plant species, '' Strelitzia nicolai'', is known to contain the pigment. Structure Bilirubin consists of an open-chain tetrapyrrole. It is formed by oxidative cleavage of a porphyrin in heme, which affords biliverdin. Biliverdin is reduced to bilirubin. After conjugation with glucuronic acid, bilirubin is water-soluble and can be excreted. Bilirubin is structurally similar to the pigment phycobilin used by certain algae to capture light energy, and to the pigment phytochrome used by plants to sense light. All of these contain an open chain of four pyrrolic rings. Like these other pigments, some of the double-bonds in bilirubin isomer ...
