picture info	Big Dan Mine Big Dan Mine is an abandoned underground mine in Northeastern Ontario, Canada. It is located about southwest of Net Lake and just west of the Ontario Northland Railway in east-central Strathy Township. It is named after Dan O'Connor, who first claimed the site in the 1890s. Mining operations began at the site in the early 1900s, making Big Dan one of the oldest mines in Temagami. Gold and silver were the mine's primary commodities, while arsenic was a secondary commodity. A forest fire destroyed much of the mining infrastructure on the site in 1907. Active mining operations on the site ceased following the fire, but mineral exploration has occurred there periodically since. Mineral exploration at Big Dan remained idle from the early 1970s to the early 1990s as a result of a land claim dispute applied by Temagami First Nations. 	Big Dan Shear Zone The Big Dan Shear Zone is a north–south trending shear zone in Northeastern Ontario, Canada, located in the municipality of Temagami. Geology The Big Dan Shear Zone was contemporaneous to volcanism due to the higher density of felsic dikes situated at the shear zone. These dikes are only present north of the Link Lake Deformation Zone, therefore they may be subvolcanic feeders to the felsic lava flows to the south. Renewed tectonism along the Big Dan Shear Zone displaced sediments east of the Ontario Northland Railway. This phase of tectonic activity along the Big Dan Shear Zone also displaced felsic dikes north of the shear zone. However, considerable displacement of the dikes at this location is unknown. The most recent tectonic activity of the Big Dan Shear Zone displaced a Proterozoic dike composed of diabase, which intersects the zone. 	Dan O'Connor (prospector) Daniel O'Connor (31 January 1864 – 30 March 1933) was a Canadian politician, entrepreneur and prospector from Pembroke, Canada West. In the late 1880s, O'Connor moved to Sudbury, where he became a sawmill operator and was elected the town's second mayor in 1894. Recognizing the potential for tourism in the area of Temagami, he founded the Temagami Hotel and Steamboat Company in 1903, which operated the Temagami Inn, the Lady Evelyn Hotel, the Ronnoco Hotel and a number of steamboats, including the Belle of Temagami. When O'Connor moved to Temagami, he was hoping to find some mineral prospects. In 1899, O'Connor created test pits in east-central Strathy Township that later became Big Dan Mine, which is named after him. Other mines in Temagami that bear his name are Little Dan at Arsenic Lake and O'Connor near Lake Temagami. O'Connor continued to move northwards where he discovered deposits of gold. 	Dan Shanahan Daniel Shanahan (born 4 January 1977) is an Irish former hurler. He has been a selector with the Waterford county team since 2013. Born in Lismore, County Waterford, Shanahan was introduced to hurling by his father, a former hurler with Waterford. He was a Harty Cup runner-up with Lismore CBS while simultaneously enjoying championship successes at senior level with the Lismore club. Shanahan made his debut on the inter-county scene at the age of seventeen when he first linked up with the Waterford minor team. A two-time Munster runner-up in this grade, he later lined out with the under-21 team. Shanahan joined the senior team in 1995. He went on to play a key role for Waterford in attack during a hugely successful era, and won four Munster medals and one National Hurling League medal.
