Bienne–Evilard Funicular
The Bienne–Evilard Funicular (German:''Leubringenbahn''; French:''Funiculaire Bienne–Evilard'') is a funicular railway in the bilingual city of Biel/Bienne in the Swiss canton of Bern. The funicular links Biel/Bienne with Leubringen/Evilard in the Jura mountains above the town. The line is operated by the FUNIC company, who also operate the nearby Biel–Magglingen Funicular. Biel–Magglingen Funicular
The Biel–Magglingen Funicular (German: ''Magglingenbahn''; French: ''Funiculaire Bienne–Macolin'') is a funicular railway in the bilingual city of Biel/Bienne in the Swiss canton of Bern. The funicular links Biel/Bienne at 435 m with Magglingen/Macolin at 873 m in the Jura mountains above the town. The line with a length of 1693 m has a maximum incline of 32% and a difference of elevation of 442 m. The funicular with two cars has a single track with a passing loop. The line is owned and operated by Verkehrsbetriebe Biel/Transports publics biennois (short: VB/TPB) since 2014, when it absorbed "FUNIC AG" that also operated nearby Bienne–Evilard Funicular.Initially it was built by ''Drahtseilbahn-Gesellschaft Biel-Magglingen'' in 1887. A passing loop (UK usage) or passing siding (North America) (also called a crossing loop, crossing place, refuge loop or, colloquially, a hole) is a place on a single line railway or tramway, often located at or near a station, where trains or trams travelling in opposite directions can pass each other. Trains/trams going in the same direction can also overtake, provided that the signalling arrangement allows it. A passing loop is double-ended and connected to the main track at both ends, though a dead end siding known as a refuge siding, which is much less convenient, can be used. A single-track railway is a railway where trains traveling in both directions share the same track. Single track is usually found on lesser-used rail lines, often branch lines, where the level of traffic is not high enough to justify the cost of constructing and maintaining a second track. Advantages and disadvantages Single track is significantly cheaper to build and maintain, but has operational and safety disadvantages. Evilard
Evilard/Leubringen is a bilingual municipality in the Biel/Bienne administrative district of the canton of Bern, Switzerland. The French name of the municipality is Evilard and the German name is Leubringen. The municipality contains two separate settlements, called in French Evilard and Macolin, in German Leubringen and Magglingen, and a rural area called in French the Pré de Macolin. History The first appearance of the municipality in written documents was in 1300, under the name of ''Lomeringen''. French speakers are recorded later as using the names ''Evillard'' or ''es Villard'' ("in the town"). A number of monasteries and the Bishopric of Basel held land in this area during the Middle Ages.
