The Berlin Office for the Protection of the Constitution is an Intelligence agency, intelligence service and the State Office for the Protection of the Constitution in Berlin, based in Klosterstraße (Berlin U-Bahn), Klosterstrasse in Mitte. Its tasks include the prevention of extremism and espionage, for which it also uses intelligence resources. In 2019, it had around 257 employees and a budget of 16.58 million euros. The Office for the Protection of the Constitution, founded in 1951, is headed by Michael Fischer. In organizational terms, it is not an independent authority, but forms Department II of the Senate Department for the Interior and Sport with seven departments. Peter Urbach
Peter Urbach (2 May 1940 – 3 May 2011) was an informant and agent provocateur of the West Berlin domestic intelligence agency, the ''Verfassungsschutz'', in the late 1960s and early 1970s. He had contacts with the Kommune 1 and with several people who would go on to form the German terrorist organization, ''Rote Armee Fraktion''. He supplied the scene with weapons, Molotov cocktails and bombs. In 2005 it was revealed that Urbach had supplied the bomb for the 9 November 1969 attempted attack on the Jewish Community Center in Berlin by the Tupamaros West-Berlin. The bomb failed to explode, but a police report concluded that it contained enough explosives to have killed many of the 250 people present in the center at the time. The people behind the attack were known by the prosecutor's office, but they were not charged, presumably to avoid uncovering the government's involvement. 2 June Movement
The 2 June Movement () was a West German anarchist militant group based in West Berlin. Active from January 1972 to 1980, the anarchist group was one of the few militant groups at the time in Germany. Although the 2 June Movement did not share the same ideology as the Red Army Faction (Baader-Meinhof Gang), these organizations were allies. The 2 June Movement did not establish as much influence in Germany as their Marxist counterparts, and is best known for kidnapping West Berlin mayoral candidate Peter Lorenz. Rising from the ashes of political group Kommune 1 and militant group Tupamaros West-Berlin, the 2 June Movement was formed in July 1971.
