Berino Formation
The Berino Formation is a Formation (geology), geologic formation in the Franklin Mountains (Texas), Franklin Mountains of southern New Mexico and western Texas. It preserves fossils dating back to the middle Pennsylvanian. Description The unit consists mostly of fossiliferous limestone with some interbedded shale. The shale is more abundant in the base of the formation, and the formation as a whole appears brown banded in outcrop. Beds are typically about thick, with a prominent massive limestone bed thick capping the formation. The total thickness is . The unit lies on the La Tuna Formation and is overlain by the Bishop Cap Formation. The formation is interpreted as resulting from deposition of rhythmically alternating lime and clay in a shallow marine environment. A geological formation, or simply formation, is a body of rock having a consistent set of physical characteristics (lithology) that distinguishes it from adjacent bodies of rock, and which occupies a particular position in the layers of rock exposed in a geographical region (the stratigraphic column). Fossiliferous Limestone
Fossiliferous limestone is any type of limestone, made mostly of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) in the form of the minerals calcite or aragonite, that contains an abundance of fossils or fossil traces. The fossils in these rocks may be of macroscopic or microscopic size. The sort of macroscopic fossils often include crinoid stems, brachiopods, gastropods, and other hard shelled mollusk remains. In some cases, microfossils such as siliceous diatom shells in deposition may convert over time to opal and chert, providing the only inferred evidence of bioactivity preserved in limestone. Paleontology in New Mexico refers to paleontological research occurring within or conducted by people from the U.S. state of New Mexico. Bryozoa (also known as the Polyzoa, Ectoprocta or commonly as moss animals) are a phylum of simple, aquatic invertebrate animals, nearly all living in sedentary colonies. Typically about long, they have a special feeding structure called a lophophore, a "crown" of tentacles used for filter feeding. Corals are marine invertebrates within the class Anthozoa of the phylum Cnidaria. They typically form compact colonies of many identical individual polyps. Coral species include the important reef builders that inhabit tropical oceans and secrete calcium carbonate to form a hard skeleton. Brachiopods (), phylum Brachiopoda, are a phylum of trochozoan animals that have hard "valves" (shells) on the upper and lower surfaces, unlike the left and right arrangement in bivalve molluscs. Brachiopod valves are hinged at the rear end, while the front can be opened for feeding or closed for protection. Two major categories are traditionally recognized, articulate and inarticulate brachiopods. The Fusulinidae is a family of fusulinacean foraminifera from the upper Carboniferous (Lower Pennsylvanian, Morrowan) to the Upper Permian ( Guadalupian), tests of which are fusiform to subcylindrical with walls of two to four layers. Fusulinid
The Fusulinida is an extinct order within the Foraminifera in which the tests are traditionally considered to have been composed of microgranular calcite. Like all forams, they were single-celled organisms. In advanced forms the test wall was differentiated into two or more layers. Loeblich and Tappan, 1988, gives a range from the Lower Silurian to the Upper Permian, with the fusulinid foraminifera going extinct with the Permian–Triassic extinction event. While the latter is true, a more supported projected timespan is from the Mid-Carboniferous period.
