Benoni, Gauteng
Benoni is a town on the East Rand, Gauteng, South Africa, some east of Johannesburg, within the City of Ekurhuleni municipality. Benoni was also the setting for the MTV-inspired movie ''Crazy Monkey: Straight Outta Benoni'', released internationally in 2005. History Jewish community Benoni was previously home to a thriving Jewish community, peaking with 400 Jewish families. Jewish residents were also widely involved in the greater community, with five Jewish mayors. The Benoni Shul congregation began with a synagogue located on Woburn Avenue in 1907, before relocating to a new, larger synagogue on Park Street in 1933. The synagogue served the community for 90 years, before closing in 2023. Rabbi Lionel Mirvis, father of Chief Rabbi, Ephraim Mirvis, previously served the congregation. Benoni Premier United
Benoni United Football Club (known as The Rabbits) is a South African Football club based in Daveyton, Benoni east of Johannesburg in the City of Ekurhuleni formerly known as the East Rand. The club is nicknamed "The Rabbits" which comes from the City of Benoni being known as the city of Rabbits being home to one of the world's oldest rabbit sanctuaries the Bunny Park. Now in its fourth iteration and rebirth the club plays its home games at Sinaba Stadium. The club was initially founded in 1915 by a group of amateur players. Due to apartheid laws became a whites only club with the launch of the NFL in 1959. The club would merge with Brakpan United and Springs United to form East Rand United in 1963 but the merger did not last long and when the club decided to return to the whites only NFL a breakaway group led by Mickey Bookholoane began talks to form a new Benoni United which would be nicknamed the Rabbits to differentiate it from the original Benoni United. Benoni Commando was a light infantry regiment of the South African Army. It formed part of the South African Army Infantry Formation as well as the South African Territorial Reserve. History Origin Operations Under the UDF =Rebel Commando= Members of the Benoni Commando sided with the strikers during the 1922 Miners Strike. At 05:00 on 12 March 1922, the Union Defence Force (UDF) attacked Benoni. The objective was to defeat striking commandos at a steel factory and then move into the rest of the town. The Government forces commenced their attack at 11:00 and immediately came under heavy fire. The attack on the steel factory was supported by artillery fire from two positions, which contributed to the striker commandos being dislodged. The attack then continued along Main Reef Road. ''Benoni'', written in 1908, is part of a double novel by Knut Hamsun. ''Benoni'' is the first part, and ''Rosa'' is the sequel and second part of the double work. ''Benoni'' is about the spirited Benoni Hartvigsen, who, at the beginning of the novel, is a poor mail-carrier and fisherman with little social standing, but one day he receives a large sum of money. During the book, Benoni develops into one of the wealthiest men in Sirilund, the village where most of the novel is set. Giuseppe Benoni (1618–1684) was an Italian architect, active during the Baroque period, mainly in Venice. Biography He was born either in Udine or Trento. He worked on a number of engineering problems for the Venetian Republic. He appears to have moved to Venice at about the age of forty, and gained the title of "Proto" to the Magistrate of Water. In 1675–76, work began on renovation of the structures and decoration of the '' Dogana da Mar'', the customs house across the canal from the Doge's palace.
