Benedict And Nancy Freedman House
The Benedict and Nancy Freedman House was a house at 315 North Via De La Paz in Pacific Palisades, Los Angeles. It was completed in 1949 to the designs of architect Richard Neutra and was destroyed in the January 2025 Palisades Fire. It was designed for the screenwriters Benedict and Nancy Freedman. The house was made from wood and featured large glass windows with clerestories. It was divided by a large patio space with a bedroom on the west side. The house had a swimming pool, separated from the house by pergolas made from redwood. Richard Neutra
Richard Joseph Neutra ( ; 8 April 1892 – 16 April 1970) was an Austrian-American architect. Living and building for most of his career in Southern California, he came to be considered a prominent and important modernist architect. His most notable works include the Kaufmann Desert House, in Palm Springs, California. Biography Neutra was born in Leopoldstadt, the second district of Vienna, Austria Hungary, on 8 April 1892, into a wealthy Jewish family. His Jewish-Hungarian father Samuel Neutra (1844–1920), was a proprietor of a metal foundry, and his mother, Elizabeth "Betty" Glaser Neutra (1851–1905) was a member of the IKG Wien. Richard had two brothers, who also emigrated to the United States, and a sister, Josephine Theresia "Pepi" Weixlgärtner, an artist who married the Austrian art historian Arpad Weixlgärtner and who later emigrated to Sweden. Benedict Freedman (December 19, 1919 – February 24, 2012) was an American novelist and mathematician, the co-author of '' Mrs. Mike'' and a professor of mathematics at Occidental College in Los Angeles.. Life Upbringing Freedman was born to a Jewish family in New York City. His father, David, emigrated to America from Romania. He studied at Columbia University from ages 13 to 16, but dropped out without graduating after the death of his father. Pacific Palisades is a neighborhood in the Westside region of the city of Los Angeles, California, situated about west of downtown Los Angeles. A pergola is most commonly used as an outdoor garden feature forming a shaded walkway, passageway, or sitting area of vertical posts or pillars that usually support crossbeams and a sturdy open lattice, often upon which woody vines are trained.
