Beck's Futures
Beck's Futures was a British art prize founded by London's Institute of Contemporary Arts and sponsored by Beck's beer given to contemporary artists. Prior to the establishment of the prize in 2000, Beck's had sponsored several exhibitions of contemporary art in Britain by providing free beer. Together with Artangel, they had also commissioned a number of works by artists, including Rachel Whiteread's ''House'' and ''Water Tower'' and pieces by Douglas Gordon and Tony Oursler. Although it does not receive as much publicity as the Turner Prize, the prize fund is larger - in 2003, it was £65,000 to the Turner Prize's £20,000. Of this, £20,000 went to the winner, who also took a share of the £40,000 divided between all the shortlisted artists. The remaining £5,000 was allocated to the Student Prize for Film and Video, with £2,000 of that going to the winner. Wim Wenders
Ernst Wilhelm "Wim" Wenders (; born 14 August 1945) is a German filmmaker, playwright, author, and photographer. He is a major figure in New German Cinema. Among many honors, he has received three nominations for the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature: for '' Buena Vista Social Club'' (1999), about Cuban music culture; '' Pina'' (2011), about the contemporary dance choreographer Pina Bausch; and '' The Salt of the Earth'' (2014), about Brazilian photographer Sebastião Salgado. Haluk Akakçe
Haluk Akakçe (born 1970 in Turkey) is a contemporary artist living and working in New York and Istanbul whose work explores the intersections between society and technology through video animations, wall paintings and sound installations. He trained in architecture at Bilkent University, Ankara, then graduated with an MFA from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Akakçe's work has appeared in the Istanbul and São Paulo Biennials, the New Museum of Contemporary Art in New York and the Walker Art Center. Hans Ulrich Obrist
Hans Ulrich Obrist (born 1968) is a Swiss art curator, critic, and historian of art. He is artistic director at the Serpentine Galleries, London. Obrist is the author of ''The Interview Project'', an extensive ongoing project of interviews. He is also co-editor of the ''Cahiers d'Art'' review. Maria Lind
Maria Lind (born in Stockholm in 1966) is a Swedish curator, art writer and educator. Since 2020, she has been the Counsellor of Cultural Affairs at the Embassy of Sweden in Moscow. Michael Landy
Michael Landy (born 1963) is one of the Young British Artists (YBAs). He is best known for the performance piece installation '' Break Down'' (2001), in which he destroyed all his possessions, and for the ''Art Bin'' project (2010) at the South London Gallery. Carey Young
Carey Young (born 1970) is a visual artist whose work is often inspired by law, politics and economics. The tools, language and architectures of these fields act as material for her videos, text works, performances and photographs, often developing from the professional cultures she explores. In her early video works, she donned attire appropriate to the business and legal worlds, enacting scenarios which examine and question each institution's power to shape society and individual identity. Francis Upritchard
Francis Upritchard (born in 1976) is a New Zealand contemporary artist based in London. In 2009, she represented New Zealand at the Venice Biennale. Education Upritchard graduated from the Ilam School of Fine Arts at the University of Canterbury, School of Fine Arts in 1997. She had initially thought to study painting, but became interested in sculpture during her first year. Soon after graduating, Upritchard moved to London. Work Upritchard's early work often referenced museum displays, collections of artefacts, and ancient cultures. Lucy Skaer
Lucy Skaer (born 1975) is a contemporary English artist who works with sculpture, film, painting, and drawing. Her work has been exhibited internationally. Skaer is a member of the Henry VIII’s Wives artist collective, and has exhibited a number of works with the group. She currently lives and works in Glasgow and London. Early life and education Skaer was born in Cambridge. She studied Fine Art at Glasgow School of Art. David Sherry (artist)
David Sherry (born 1974) is an artist. Sherry was born in Northern Ireland before studying at the Glasgow School of Art. He is best known for his performance art. ''Stitching'' is a video of him stitching pieces of wood to his feet while he offers verbal instructions on how to do this. Other works include ''Carrying a bucket of water about for a week'' and ''Avoiding eye contact for one seven-day period'', both of which consist of the activities in their titles. Sherry has said he is trying to "expose the systematic processes of day to day life". In 2003, Sherry was shortlisted for the Beck's Futures prize. In 2006 Sherry exhibited at WestGermany Gallery, Berlin. The exhibition was entitled 'Solid'. In 2012 Flawedcore Records released Sherry's album of spoken word and music "I Love Those Paintings". Inventory (artists)
Inventory are a collective of British artists, writers and art theorists, founded in 1996. Some of their pieces see them engage in performance art in public spaces. ''Coagulum (Oxford Street)'' in 2000, saw them form into a close group on London's Oxford Street, thus disrupting the flow of pedestrians, before entering a shopping centre and dancing to the piped music. For another piece, they played football on The Mall with a rubber skull, using Buckingham Palace and Admiralty Arch as goals. Other pieces, such as the installation ''Requiem for the Empty Quarter'' at The Approach Gallery in Bethnal Green during 2002, used modified and written-upon objects found on the street.
